The unusual seismograph trace on:-

bbnet.gein.noa.gr/plots/THR3.html

has been repeated at about 1415 for about 20 minutes. This time it is visible on:-

bbnet.gein.noa.gr/plots/THR5.html

which is on Therassia.

It will be 6-8 weeks before I can get back to Santorini.

Tks Thera10. Santorini hasn't shown much activity lately, so I'm not missing anything . . yet.

anon. coward of jordan - Follow up Andrew Newman's paper, or the many reports that have been posted about it. Many volcanoes inflate far more than Santorini and don't erupt. IF Nea Kameni erupts it may be more of a tourist attraction than dangerous! Small quakes, noise, ashfall can affect lungs if the wind is in the wrong direction. Similar eruptions have taken place several times in the last 200 years or so. There is a slight suggestion that an undersea vent may open at the point of greatest inflation about 2km to the N of Nea K. In this case explosions may be more violent, causing waves affecting boat traffic. To the NE there is an undersea volcano called Koloumbo. IF that starts winding up, there will be sufficient warning to get out - do so!!!
I had 2 weeks in Santo recently - it was beautiful. I would recommend a visit to anyone. Boat trip around the Caldera is a must, so is a visit to Akrotiri Archaelogical site. Dangerous?? I'll be back as soon as the medics give me the all-clear.

Good news from this volcano. Here is good article what is now going on. [link to www.esa.int]

Uplift and magma chamber growing is stopped. That satelite system shows it to us.

Also that article told us that there is still magma beneath santorini.

So santorini is now resting and i think it takes just little time when it starts to get more power its magma chamber.

A 3.1 fairly close to Santorini this am. First activity for a day or four. I'm always torn between seeing an eruption there, and worrying about my friends. I'm still in uk though - a 9 hour op and 12 days in hospital will prevent my return to Santo till Sept at least.

Santorini Volcano Fills Up With Magma, Most Since Last Eruption

Greece’s Santorini Volcano, the site of an eruption 3,600 years ago that wiped out Minoan settlements on the island and in Crete, has begun to fill with molten rock, expanding the most since its last eruption from 1939 to 1941.

The chamber of liquid rock, or magma, beneath the volcano expanded by 10 million to 20 million cubic meters from January 2011 to April this year, a University of Oxford-led team wrote in the journal Nature Geoscience. That’s as much as 15 times the size of London’s Olympic Stadium, the university said in an accompanying statement....

Re: Santorini (nea kameni volcano) unrest. Water tempature in caldera rising! Magma spot also detected 4km depth.
New scientific data from the Greek isle of Santorini has shown signs of unrest for the first time in more than 50 years, and could be evidence of an impending eruption similar to the one that last struck in 1950, but far less catastrophic than the one that wiped out Minoan settlements on the island of Crete some 3,600 years ago. The Santorini volcanic eruption circa-1650 BC formed a large crater, or caldera, which is now flooded by the sea. The crater has now begun to fill will molten rock and expand the most since the last eruption from 1939 to 1941. The chamber of magma beneath the volcano has expanded by 10 million to 20 million cubic meters (comparable to 15 London Olympic Stadiums) between January 2011 and April 2012, according to data compiled by a team of scientists led by Oxford University and published in the journal Nature Geoscience. This expansion is so big that the island has been forced upwards by nearly 6 inches and has triggered a series of small tremors, the first signs of seismic activity in 25 years, raising fears that the volcano is readying to blow once again.

For their research, UK’s Natural Environment Research Council used satellite radar images and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that are capable of detecting the movements of the earth’s surface even just minutes of an inch. The data are allowing scientists to get a better understanding about the inner working of the volcano. A series of small earthquakes began shaking the region beneath the islands of Santorini in January 2011. Most were so small that they were barely detected even with highly-sensitive seismometers in use. Still, it was the first sign of activity beneath the volcano in 25 years. Study coauthor Michelle Parks, of Oxford University’s Department of Earth Sciences, visited the island several times in 2011 after seismic data began pouring in. She said tour guides had updated her on the changes in the strong scent of gas being released form the summit, and also changes in the color of water in some of the bays around the islands. She said on another occasion “two guides told me they had felt an earthquake while they were on the volcano and that the motion of the ground had actually made them jump.”

“Locals working in restaurants on the main island of Thera became aware of the increase in earthquake activity due to the vibration and clinking of glasses in their bars,” Parks reported residents as saying. Another coauthor of the paper, Dr. Juliet Biggs of Bristol University, said: “People were obviously aware that something was happening to the volcano, but it wasn’t until we saw the changes in the GPS, and the uplift on the radar images that we really knew that molten rock was being injected at such a shallow level beneath the volcano.” “Many volcanologists study the rocks produced by old eruptions to understand what happened in the past, so it’s exciting to use cutting-edge satellite technology to link that to what’s going on in the volcanic plumbing system right now,” she added.

There is a conference on here at the moment:-

has a short report, and promises more details to come. Essentially everything is back to pre 2011 levels. I'm a lot weaker than I thought so cant do too much walking, but tomorrow I'll try to find out where the conference is being held - probably Nomikos Centre. Nov 7th? Drat - we have to go home on 26th Oct or we could have met!

About 1 month ago, people from Chania, Crete reported strange noises. The official explanation was airforce military drills. Laboratory of Geophysics and Seismology, recorded five vibrations that are man-made according to them.
