There have been now 0.2 and 0.3 little earthquakes in the caldera. But looks like that swarm is over and now it rest.

This is not good thing.

2.5 magnitude earthquake depth 1km hits directly in caldera.

No there is many same size swarms. Between 0.1-3.5 earthquakes. Maybe more than katla.

I hope those seismographs data came from sea but looks like there is lot of magma movement.

I think there is small amount magma quite near surface which one came there when there was that big earthquake swarm earlier in summer and that magma is not danger. Looks like there is not much pressure. Problem is then when the big one come up same way.

They certainly seem constant. I just tried to translate the website and it wouldn't do it.

Is there anywhere on there that is advising of this activity? We need Ostria to have a look for us. This could go on for months.

You say Santorini is known to just explode? Like Ruapehu?

Okey there have been quite much swarming inside and outside the caldera. Last one is 1.8 earthquake.

Seismographs are also quite scary looking. There have bee really big swarm south from santorini. It was between crete and santorini. Here seismos:

There have been lots of activity in last 48hours:

[link to geophysics.geo.auth.gr]

Santorini is officially rest but truth is that there is scientist now to look closet what is going on. They have put new devices in there and what i have heard they are concerned what is going on.

This volcano is famous that when it goes active it could erupt really fast. And its power is huge. There have been many ancient eruptions that nobody know that power because it is wiped out all evidence.

This place takes its energy from all plate movement in mediterraen sea. So last earthquakes between crete and santorini directly effects this place. You can see it from those seismographs which are really scary looking. Looks like there is some tremors every week. Some of them looks really big ones.

Thanks for the updates guys. This is a worry. Ostria please let us know if any news updates happen.

I have another question. The number of quakes happening around Greece and the Agean. Is that a fairly normal number or way over the top? I know they average these numbers out over a year but what I mean is this particular constant swarm different?. Or is it like NZ where those sort of numbers could be considered normal?

Meaning anything from 10 to 30 a day (that would fall into a normal day in NZ)

There is again swarming in caldera. There had over 1.6 earthquake before this one.

There is lots of fault lines near greek and lots of earthquake activity and i cannot say is that unusual movement. Maybe not. Only unusual thing now is that santorini is showing awakening.

That is because african and arabian plate push european plate. That generate enegrgy and one main spot is about beneath crete area which one cause earthquakes there. And that energy generates magma beneath those plate and main vent that magma is santorini and italy volcanoes.

By the way there should be soon huge quake some where that fault line because there is so much voltage under those two plates. Much bigger than that turkey earthquake.

They are normal in general. I heard one seismologist after the big one in turkey saying that what is unusual is that lately we dont have bigger ones as we used too, so he said "we know a big one will come (meaning a 6R or bigger) so its better to be prepared."
On the other hand we dont have many swarms here (I can think of the latest around kalamata and the ones around Naupaktos) but I guess the swarm around Santorini is the one caused by magma moving and we didnt have such in the previous years as long as I remember.

OK, so obviously the Santorini swarm is not normal and there is a chance of a bigger quake in Greece because you are having lots of small ones and no big ones.

Thanks for that Ostria. It helps me get my head around things at your end.

We had a 4.5 or a 5.2 (not sure yet) close to Naupaktos a while ago. (they report it near Patras)

And this 1.6 earthquake but those earthquakes are again really scary one.

First is that Santorini activity will rise.

Second is that i get deja vu about japan earthquake. Is that possible those quakes will start huge one?
