Swarm is not ending. There have been several small earthquakes and now 1.6 earthquake in caldera. Many volcano site talks same thing: Greeks dont give any information what is going on beneath santorini. They dont give even how depth those earthquakes are. Any other area there is much more data avaible. [link to geophysics.geo.auth.gr]

I'm quite sure they dont want to public discuss in tourist site that one of the main tourist place is actually massive volcano where activity is rising.

I'm sure there is danger that some tourist group get some day some kind of gas poisoning and then there will be talk where that gas came from.
Keep Smiling

For the person in Santorini who has been leaving me lovely messages whilst I have been away. Thank you very much and may you have a safe and happy start to the New Year too. I hope your Christmas was a lovely one and that your volcano continues to behave itself.

Re: Santorini (nea kameni volcano) unrest. Water tempature in caldera rising! Magma spot also detected 4km depth.
Had a couple of quick looks at the Seismometers - the place seems to have quietened down a little bit. Having said that there appears to have been a 3.3 very close to Koloumbo yesterday. THR seismos seem to be very noisy, the temporary ones (SAP that are working!) are clearer and not as active as december.
Someone wrote about tourism. It's true - Santo is almost totally dependent on the Tourist trade. They have had several bad years due to the world economic situation let alone theirs so they do not want scares about Minoan sized eruptions. A bang from Nea K is unlikely to be much worse than anything last century, but nonetheless would frighten people fed on diets on St Helens and Krakatau!! I was in Santo a couple of Junes ago when a 5.1 rattled our coffee cups. The atmosphere amongst the locals was extremely tense for a couple of days afterwards - they feared a deep tectonic movement rather than something shifting in the magma chamber, but that feeling persists. Any activity shifting towards a Koloumbo eruption is certainly to be feared. Back in 1650 it killed by suffocation and tsunami.
We'll still be there this summer though!!

Re: Santorini (nea kameni volcano) unrest. Water tempature in caldera rising! Magma spot also detected 4km depth.
Thank you about uptades. Intresting information about that big earthquake.

Looks like new swarm is started again. This was yesterday:

Magnitude ML 2.6
Region DODECANESE ISLANDS, GREECE
Date time 2012-01-08 13:11:24.2 UTC
Location 36.41 N ; 25.41 E
Depth 6 km
Distances 123 km N Iráklion (pop 137,154 ; local time 15:11:24.2 2012-01-08)
122 km N Néa alikarnassós (pop 11,886 ; local time 15:11:24.2 2012-01-08)
2 km SW Thíra (pop 2,376 ; local time 15:11:24.2 2012-01-08)

and after that there have been again several small quakes in caldera: [link to geophysics.geo.auth.gr]

Looks like that those quakes are magma movement because depth is 6km.

What information i have get looks like that scientist fears that kolumbo is place where that eruption hapens if it hapens.

Anyway also there it self is really active also.

We had a 3.2 or simiral about half an hour ago.. not big but it is only 4-5 klm deep so the people there felt it and were a bit scared. Seismologists said it is usual, so we keep an eye on it

Re: Santorini (nea kameni volcano) unrest. Water tempature in caldera rising! Magma spot also detected 4km depth.
ok let me give you some information on the eruptions that followed the big one that erased the Minoan culture off the map.

From 197 bc, we have 11 eruptions. We have photos from the eruption of 1935-1928 and 1950.
The eruption of 1950 shook the island quite well overnight sprung a new island, Nea Kameni, and destroyed several buildings because of earthquakes that followed the explosion. The explosion was underwater, and because of that there were not serious problems. Somehow the island benefited from this explosion as most older buildings collapsed and they had to rebuild with new buildings, which boomed the tourism from then on. This eruption lasted less than one month.

1925-1926 photo

1950 photo
[link to www.geo.auth.gr]

We also have accounts from previous eruptions like the one on 23 May 1707. Father Tarillon, a jesuit missioner who has installed in Santorini reports to his superiors.

"Five days ago, on May 18, two small earthquakes were felt on the island. But no one cared. It seems that from this day on a small island started to emerge from the depths of the sea.
Anyway, in the next morning the sailors saw the peaks of island coming out and thought it was the remains of a shipwreck. So they took the boats and went to see the wreck and to search for survivors. But instead of wreck they fell on rocks. Fearful the Santorinioi quickly returned to the island and narrated the strange phenomenon that saw.

Panic spread throughout the island of Santorini. The barmy residents lived moments of anguish waiting for explosions and sinking. But three days passed and nothing to disaster happened.
Then some brave Santorinioi decided to go near and see up close what happens. They sailed around with their boats carefully studying everything. Then, seeing how there was no danger, they went even closer and stepped on the new land. Out of curiosity they stepped from rock to rock and found out how soft these rocks were which were cut like bread. Indeed some said that the color, composition and even taste, was like barley bread. Their best finding though was numerous oysters, which stuck on the rocks and were very rare in Santorini. So we all set about picking as many as they could.

"Suddenly they felt swaying rocks and all, to tremble beneath their feet. Terrified, they left the little island and jumped in their boats. This vibration was simply a slight movement of the island, which was growing.
Within few days it began developing twelve meters wide and six high.
But the island was not growing properly or evenly. Many times one part lifted and another sank. One day I watched a huge rock rising in the middle of the island for about 15 feet. I closely watched it for four days. Suddenly it sank in the sea and perished.
But other rocks, came out and sank and again came out of the water and became more stable. All of these quakes were shaking the island of Mikri Kameni (Little Burned). A deep crack appeared first in the top.
"Meanwhile, the sea constantly changed colors. From bright green to reddish-pale. A heavy smell rose from the depths of the waters.

"On July 16 for the first time smoke appeared from the new island. But not from the visible part. The smoke blows black rosary rocks that had emerged at the point where the sea was by then bottomless. 'From these rocks formed two separate little islands. One was called 'Aspronisi' (white island) and the other Mavronisi (black island) by their color. Soon, however, they joined together and the black rocks became the center of the island. Dense and whitish smoke was rising constantly.

"On the night of 19 to 20 July, at the center of this smoke flames sprang. The people at Skaros panicked. The houses were built within half a league, and the castle hung suspended on vertical cliffs where the sea ended. I waited to blown up from time to time by the fire spreading out its tentacles certainly, and in the depths of their rock. So, they decided to quit the castle, and their belongings to go to another island or another corner of the island.
"The Turks who were in those days on the island to collect taxes were frighten to death. Frantic of the sight of flames rise from the depths of the sea asked the people to begin prayers to God and invited the children to go out into the streets and shout "Lord have mercy." Because, they said, the children were pure and their supplication, could calm down the divine wrath.

If magma is moving, is Nea Kameni bulging? I saw a very simple
tiltmeter there many years ago, but it had vanished by 2000 -
or been moved. Is anybody telemetering sea level data from NK?

This dont make good in santorini magmachamber and it is possibility magma lies that point also. That magma chamber is huge. We had to remember this place is bigger than kratau and scientist are sure there have been many supereruptions before that famous eruption. This place is again absolutely place what to look.

There is many scientist in santorini and what i have understand they dont expect eruption in nea kameni but it is ofcourse possible spot. Santorini better name thera is extermely agressive volcano which erupts really fast. Those scientist thinks that eruption spot will be next in new submarine volcano kolumbo.

but now you can follow how that red star moves between two spots: that center where that big over 5.0 earthquake happens and just now 4.1 and also caldera swarms there have been really much small quakes exactly where is thera caldera.

I try to follow that situation today as much i can. But something will happen there and it is soon (1day-100year)=D.

There is only one really small earthquake last 24hours in kolumbo. That huge swarm is south from santorini but kolumbo is quiet. That earthquake swarm wich one is south had felt in santorini island but there is no damage reports.

Here again that earhquake map. Kolumbo is north from santorini island where is that small red spot.

Re: Santorini (nea kameni volcano) unrest. Water tempature in caldera rising! Magma spot also detected 4km depth.
10cm??? It is much. Interesting. Yes those quakes are tectonic and that movement absolutely effect in santorini magma chamber.

First tectonic movement here generates magma. Santorini caldera magmachamber takes it magma when africa and eura-asian plates moves and there have been lots of plate movement always. Thats why there have been eruptions really often it erupt first after every 50 year then there was eruption about evry 10year now it is over 50year when it last time erupts. So i think it is overtime and next one could be bad one. Last big vei 4 eruption it takes 750 year before it erupted again.

Second this kind of earthquakes and so shallow quakes shaking its magma chamber for sure. Thats why scientist are worry what is going on. They never told if there is magma movement because this place is massive tourist place and official report about possible eruption threat in thera caldera kills it tourism quite fast.

Earthquakes strike Ireland and southwest of Santorini volcano in Crete

Posted on January 26, 2012 Crete jolted by moderate quake: An earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted the islands of Crete and Cyclades in the Aegean Sea in southern Greece on Thursday, without reported casualties. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the epicentre of the quake was traced 48 km southwest of Santorini at a depth of 30 km, Greek scientists said. Local authorities have reported no injuries or major material damage. Initially the EuroMediterannean Seismic Institute had estimated a moderate tremor measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale tracing the epicentre at 78 km northwest of the city of Herakleion in Crete. The tremor was felt in a major part of the Aegean Sea, including Crete, Santorini, Cyclades, Rhodes and eastern Peloponnese. In comments in local media, Athens University Geology School Professor Efthymios Lekkas reassured that there was no reason for anxiety over the quake. Greece is regularly hit by moderate earthquakes throughout the year. The earthquake-prone country has been hit by devastating tremors many times in recent history, more than any other European country. –English CRI [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]
