Only just looked at seismometer THR3 on "Kammeni" What's that between 0400 and 0500???

has been repeated at about 1415 for about 20 minutes. This time it is visible on:-

which is on Therassia.

It will be 6-8 weeks before I can get back to Santorini.

anon. coward of jordan - Follow up Andrew Newman's paper, or the many reports that have been posted about it. Many volcanoes inflate far more than Santorini and don't erupt. IF Nea Kameni erupts it may be more of a tourist attraction than dangerous! Small quakes, noise, ashfall can affect lungs if the wind is in the wrong direction. Similar eruptions have taken place several times in the last 200 years or so. There is a slight suggestion that an undersea vent may open at the point of greatest inflation about 2km to the N of Nea K. In this case explosions may be more violent, causing waves affecting boat traffic. To the NE there is an undersea volcano called Koloumbo. IF that starts winding up, there will be sufficient warning to get out - do so!!!
I had 2 weeks in Santo recently - it was beautiful. I would recommend a visit to anyone. Boat trip around the Caldera is a must, so is a visit to Akrotiri Archaelogical site. Dangerous?? I'll be back as soon as the medics give me the all-clear.

There have been shallow earthquakes directly in santorini caldera and also kolumbo volcano. Let see if new swarm is started. Earthquake activity is rising here.

Hi reporting live from santorini, all seems good. Had a great weekend. Now i am sitting in the balcon of my room with view the caldera. Uplift and magma chamber growing is stopped. That satelite system shows it to us.

Also that article told us that there is still magma beneath santorini.

So santorini is now resting and i think it takes just little time when it starts to get more power its magma chamber.

A 3.1 fairly close to Santorini this am. First activity for a day or four. I'm always torn between seeing an eruption there, and worrying about my friends. I'm still in uk though - a 9 hour op and 12 days in hospital will prevent my return to Santo till Sept at least.

This expansion is so big that the island has been forced upwards by nearly 6 inches and has triggered a series of small tremors, the first signs of seismic activity in 25 years, raising fears that the volcano is readying to blow once again.

For their research, UK’s Natural Environment Research Council used satellite radar images and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that are capable of detecting the movements of the earth’s surface even just minutes of an inch. The data are allowing scientists to get a better understanding about the inner working of the volcano. A series of small earthquakes began shaking the region beneath the islands of Santorini in January 2011. Most were so small that they were barely detected even with highly-sensitive seismometers in use. Still, it was the first sign of activity beneath the volcano in 25 years. Study coauthor Michelle Parks, of Oxford University’s Department of Earth Sciences, visited the island several times in 2011 after seismic data began pouring in. She said tour guides had updated her on the changes in the strong scent of gas being released form the summit, and also changes in the color of water in some of the bays around the islands. She said on another occasion “two guides told me they had felt an earthquake while they were on the volcano and that the motion of the ground had actually made them jump.”

“Locals working in restaurants on the main island of Thera became aware of the increase in earthquake activity due to the vibration and clinking of glasses in their bars,” Parks reported residents as saying. Another coauthor of the paper, Dr. Juliet Biggs of Bristol University, said: “People were obviously aware that something was happening to the volcano, but it wasn’t until we saw the changes in the GPS, and the uplift on the radar images that we really knew that molten rock was being injected at such a shallow level beneath the volcano.” “Many volcanologists study the rocks produced by old eruptions to understand what happened in the past, so it’s exciting to use cutting-edge satellite technology to link that to what’s going on in the volcanic plumbing system right now,” she added.

After 5 months of cancer treatment, I've been cleared to visit Santorini again at last. So I booked yesterday (2nd) for the 10th and there are quakes near the SW swarm area and Koloumbo!!!

But nothing since I got here!!!

Will be there on the 7 of Nov. Hopefully get some vids of the active caldera. Just as long as it doesn't blow while I'm standing on it.

You home yet? 3.8 quake under Koloumbo on 22nd Nov would probably have been felt in the N of the island if you were still there.
