Is this the same river that the aircraft crashed last year? Manhattan is an island. The Hudson River to the west and NY Harbor to the south. The Spuyten Duivil Creek at the most northern point off the Hudson and the Harlem to East River back down to NY harbor on the East side. |

Obtained by NBC news, this video shot by an Italian tourist shows the moment of impact between a Piper Saratoga and a Eurocopter over the Hudson River. The accident killed all nine aboard the two aircraft. August 8, 2009 Helicopter, Plane Collide Over Hudson The midair collision Saturday of a Piper Saratoga and a Liberty Helicopters American Eurocopter EC 130 over the Hudson River killed all nine people aboard both aircraft and again brought attention to the flight rules that govern the narrow, high traffic, VFR corridors that border Manhattan. The rules allow aircraft to fly at less than 1,100 feet in some areas over the Hudson River, meaning that traffic is funneled between skyscrapers that are now on both the New York and New Jersey sides of the river, over bridges barges and boats, and under the imaginary ceiling that forms the bottom of very busy Class B airspace between Newark, and both LaGuardia and JFK International airports. |

northerntomcat User ID: 1390569 Canada 10/04/2011 08:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Paul Dudley was the pilot of this chopper and he has ton's of experience in this type, as he is the owner operator of this company. Just take a look at this The chatter inside the corridor is rapid-fire, said Paul Dudley, a pilot who has flown helicopters for 20 years. Once inside it, he said, there are a few basic protocols for pilots to remember: Tune your radio to a frequency of 123.05 — the “common traffic advisory frequency” — and identify your aircraft and announce your location and planned route. “Every pilot’s job is to see and avoid,” said Mr. Dudley, who is the director of the municipal airport in Linden, N.J., which serves as home base for several helicopter pilots. When he heard news of Saturday’s collision between a helicopter and a private plane, Mr. Dudley immediately thought of the congested skies above the city. He said he suspected that the airplane ran into the back of the slower-moving helicopter, which he said should have had the right of way if it was rising from a lower altitude. “You cannot see behind you in a helicopter,” Mr. Dudley said. [link to www.nytimes.com] Interesting that the same man that is quoted above, which is from August 8, 2009, is the pilot in the crash today. The story above is referring to the chopper/plane collision crash that I posted about earlier in this thread. When I did so, I had no idea that Mr. Dudley, who had been consulted regarding the 2009 crash, was the pilot involved in today's crash. |
