be careful what you buy... that costco crap is just that.

everyone is trying to capitalize on the nation\'s fear right now.

if you\'re going to buy long term storable food, do so from a well known manufacturer, i.e. mountain house, wise, etc.

if money is a concern do 5 gallon buckets (food grade) full of rice, beans, and dried veggies.

canned meats? spam, vienna sausages, ham, potted meat, sandwich spread, tuna, salmon.

check the expiration dates... but that doesn\'t mean they\'ll bed bad... it just might mean there will be some \"settling\" and the product won\'t be as appealing.

i\'ve eaten tuna nearly 3 years past the expiration date with no ill affects.

Keystone beef is one product I will not buy. Uncooked it smells like dog food.

Re: Canned foods that have the longest storage shelf life
Costco has an online deal now, $799 for a one-year supply of long-lasting freeze-dried and dehydrated food. I got something similar from Sam's for about the same price. Duration is rated at around 15 to 30 years. (Probably better off counting on 10 years, which is your goal anyway.) You will need to have a supply of water to rehydrate, but if you don't have a supply of water then you're doomed anyway, right?

Here's a link to Costco's deal:

I got the similar product from Sam's, and I added some canned foods, MREs (expensive but I know I like them from my time in the Army), some rice and some beans, plus a large garden and plenty of seeds.

Most canned food is good for at least a few years after the 'best before' date. One that I didn't like after that date was Dinty Moore Beef stew. I'm sure it was ok but I didn't like the taste.

Remember back when gov bot, what, a billion dollars worth of freezdried. Now they're stock piling ammo and all the rest of it. Do what they're doing....

fried up with a lot of potatoes and onions it probably would be ok....

I did take a few bites, it tasted ok. But the smell before cooking was something else. Let someone else cook it up and not tell u what it is.

Re: Canned foods that have the longest storage shelf life
Here is something most people don't consider.

Most canners are going to those dam pull top lids.

The food does NOT keep as well in pull top lids.

All spam has that type of lid. I have had the spam
go bad and the can bulge. Check the ends of the cans
before you open than by pressing on the lid. If the lid
gives or "pings" then AIR has gotten into the can and I
would toss it out. I have even found such a situation in
cans that have the regular sealed lids. If the ends of the can make a "clicking" noise when you press on it....don't eat it.

Be wise and check the condition of the can first.

Than when you open it with a hand manual can opener...

listen for any noises.........there should not be any noises. If there are noises like hissing I would not eat it.

If stuff splashes out of the can when you break the seal don't eat it.

Of course if the food smells "off".....don't eat it.

If there is strange colorations or something weird or black
then of course don't eat it.

Be wise, be safe and be sensible about consuming damaged cans.

If the can has a pull top and any part of the can is dented...I would NOT eat it. The seal on the pull top is much more fragile than on a sealed can.

This is just my opinion....just my personal opinion of what I wouldn't eat.

You do what ever you feel right for your situation.

Re: Canned foods that have the longest storage shelf life
Does anyone know what kind of canned foods have the longest storage shelf life? I do not want to pay 2 grand for efoods direct. There has to be a cheaper solution. Hormel chilli lasts 3 years, but im looking for something along the lines of 10 years so I can buy 1000 cans every 10 years. Plz help.

Don't have a link but there have been studies done on
canned food from World War II where if the can wasn't
damaged the food was still perfectly edible but something
like 20% less nutritious. You can look the study up probably

Corned beef has expiration dates pushing 2017 on tins I buy at the moment. It'll keep for far longer than that though.

All canned foods (except fruit juices) will last YEARS beyond the expiration dates listed on the cans. Soldiers in the Vietnam war were eating rations from WWII. Just make sure the can tops are clean when you open them and you'll be fine.
