Does anyone know what kind of canned foods have the longest storage shelf life? I do not want to pay 2 grand for efoods direct. There has to be a cheaper solution. Hormel chilli lasts 3 years, but im looking for something along the lines of 10 years so I can buy 1000 cans every 10 years. Plz help.

Question: if you live in the US, how long should your stored food last ?

And if you are living in Europe, is the issue of food storage relevant at all ?

All metal cans are lined with a plastic material. I'd be worried about serious health risks about food stored in cans--acidic things would be worse.

The posters suggesting dehydrated items--I'd think that would be the best way to go.

Also--oils get rancid quickly, except coconut oil.

Lots of things to consider, would be a shame to spend a lot of money only to have it get spoiled.

When I was in the navy we ate sea rations from the korean war,as long as the cans are kept in a cool dark place they will stay good years past the exp date.

Re: Canned foods that have the longest storage shelf life
The expiration date on caned foods is very conservative for reasons of liability and continued sales. A can of corned beef that was canned in 1915 was opened in 1970 and found to still be edible. The storage conditions of the cans matters. Corned beef and baked beans are safe 6-10 times longer than the specified date if they are kept cool and dry. You can make some canned foods last indefinitely if you make your own cans plated in gold or rhodium. The stuff that last the least are acidic foods like tomatoes. To prevent the acid eating into the tin plate these days they are lined with a type of plastic that contains Bis-phenol. Over time that leaches into the food and contaminates it with stuff you do not want in your system. The very best solution for very long term is glass, but that has more storage problems than cans.

Theoretically, oils can't get rancid if there is no oxygen. So, filling the container to the brim, leaving no air space, could avoid rancidity at least for some appreciable time.

The only canned goods that actually go bad are citrus and tomatoes.

As long as a can is not rusty or severely dented, the food is good for as long as you will need it. The nutritional value decreases over time, but the food is still edible.

Best thing to do: Learn to grow, raise, or find your own food and how to can it.

Why? Because you know perfectly well that something big is coming, the big secret (Planet X) and when the food deliveries stop, when the supermarket shelves are bare, you will wish you had listened and moved to a rural location and started farming.

Not everyone can move, most cannot (tied to those jobs, those lucky enough to have one), but you can STILL grow food in a window, practice canning fresh vegetables you purchase, and gather the seeds, equipment, and tools you will need to feed yourselves.

How about this for a novel idea? Don't ask your governments for anything. Rely on yourselves only.

Your survival in the Aftertimes, post pole shift, will be a slap in the face of the power and wealthy elites who have been preparing for decades without telling YOU what they found with taxpayer dollars.

Yep: They found Planet X/Nibiru in 1983 and NASA (I think) will announce the reality of Planet X before November. Get ready.

Longest lasting canned goods:
Pink salmon(longest lasting)
canned hams
corned beef hash
spam
Vienna sausages
sardines
red salmon
crab meat
tuna

Not a canned good, but honey will last forever.

I was just gonna post that about honey. Also sugar if it's kept free of moisture (wrap in tin foil), and white flour.

I was wondering about Marmite (Vegemite) as it's high in vitamins. The jar gives it only about 18 months, but I'd imagine it'd last much longer as it has so much salt, like tinned salmon. Am I right d'you know?

Re: Canned foods that have the longest storage shelf life
Expiration dates on tinned (metal canned) foods is about 2 years on average. However if kept in a cool, dry and dark place they can last on average 6 years with a regular tin lasting a decade with the food inside still good.

The real problem is that they spray a coating of plastic insides of tinned food. That degrades over time and leeches toxins into the food.

The best method of persevering canned food is to can it yourself in jars. Pressure steamed jars will last decades without plastic from the lid leeching into the foods. The lids have a plastic liner on the inside along with a rubberized seal around the rim. As long as the food isn't touching those, the food is safe.

You also can tell readily if their is spoilage in the jar, the lids have a button that pops up after the vacuum seal is broken. Since rot/decay releases gasses, the pressure inside the jar goes up and causes the button to pop-up.

While food is edible for a decade, the real problem is that vitamins, proteins and essential fats break down over time. It doesn't matter if you deep freeze, freeze dry, can/jar... It is a chemical process that is a matter of time.

Thus foods stored will in 5 years lose about half of their nutritional content for most of the vitamins and will have protein break down of about 10-20%.

While MRE's and other long stored foods are 'decent' long term for their nutritional value, they are not as good for you as fresh foods, and traditionally preserved foods of 2 years or less.

Ultimately the 2 year expiration date is tied into the nutritional value of the contents of the container.
 Quoting: Bowyn Aerrow

Dinty Moore brand
beef stew is supposed to last at least 10 to 20 years or so because the lining inside the can does NOT contain the bad kind of plastic.

One can of beef stew or a can of chicken stew dumped over a big pile of cooked rice will make a filling meal for several people.

I doubt white flour will last for a really long time, but I do seem to remember wheat grains have been found in Egyptian tombs which were still able to germinate.

Wheat berries (wheat that has not yet been ground or milled) will last a minimum of 30 years if kept in a cool, dry place. Of course you'd have to mill it yourself on an as-needed basis and bake your own products, but you can get wheat berries for around $1 a pound, delivered. That's a really cheap stock-up item. Just make sure the grain mill you have (or plan to get) is either hand-cranked or has an option for hand-cranking.

Most canned food tastes fine for a few years after the expiration date. In a breakdown crisis you will wolf it down.
