Re: Your list of #1 barter/survival items when TSHTF
Items like sugar and salt will still be in people's houses if they die or flee their homes. Most people, when they grab what's left of their food stores, forget about their kitchen canisters and shakers. Flour, sugar, salt and pepper should all be readily available just by foraging a bit in people's abandoned homes. Likewise, other 'non essentials' like cold meds, feminine products and bandages. (and that all important anal bleach)

I remember prior to Y2K, people had survival lists that included crazy things like needle and thread, as if somehow those items wouldn't still be laying in some uninteresting aisle at Michael's or their local grocery store. And let's face it...by the time you NEED a needle and thread, most of your competition for it will have been eliminated.

I like the idea of having a bow much more so instead of a gun. A bow is vet practical in many settings. Lighters I agree will also probably be pretty handy because a lot of people have no idea how to start a fire without one. Salt is also a good item to have.

Yeah, I got a sling shot. I'm working my way up to a bow. I want to buy a good one and they're pretty expensive even second hand.
A sling shot is probably better for small game birds though anyway.

What a BAD list! The guns will get reduce your family's lifespan to minutes if not seconds. And the food and water? They could be utterly lethal and toxic from radiation.

The most important things are:-

!. Geiger counter - Use of this can be swapped for about everything else. Small portable is best. Old COld War ones are too heavy. The best is the small portable Medcom.com ones.

2. Car - he best way to survive a nuclear war or even civil disorder is not to be there when it happens. Statistics show that the most pulled-over car in North AMerica is ALWAYS the Hummer. The more unobtrusive the better, so just to slip away without anyone thinkig that you hare a threat or have anything worth stealing. Honda Civic is great. THe Breadbox ones with hatch back can be converted to have the hatchback area to be a separate appartment for a cat or small pet. Carries loads too and can really bomb along if yo need.

3. Place to go - Safest place in North America is...Carmacks. Why? What comes to mind when you say Carmacks? Answer NOTHING. It is neither stategic place, has no steel mills or major industries near it. Furthermore, Carmacks is built on coal and is a highly defensible place, rings by mountains with a river along one side... so, no electrcity or power in mid-winter? Just go and dig a hole in the garden and burn the coal you dig out.

4. Booster pack - With this and a recharger pack, yyou can ensure that you can recharge your AA and AAA batteries for the geiger counter and power up other things from your Honda Civic engine.

5. Small Solar Panel - If your battery goes dead in your car and your solar panel is dead, you have an ultimate way to recharge.

6. Penicillin - Actually there is a way to obtain this legally. The stuff that vets give to cats is the same as that for humans, just in tiny doses. Take your cat in a few times after supposed cat fight bites and you have a descent supply.

7. Long bow -Easily dissembled to look just like a long walking stick. Does not need a licence and you can make ammo when you are out in the woods.

8 Potasium Iodide pills - Actually vitamin supplements are a fraction of the cost of the official nuclear war ones.

9 Gas can and syphon - Just incase you have to go a long way. Also useful if you have to get corrupted stuff out of a gas tank.

Like I said when I first started this thread, the list can change due to certain circumstances and environment. Btw, a safe place to go can be very different depending on the scenario. A lot of the things you mentioned I already have but didn't mention because I don't believe they are essential. Also, a few things you mentioned are on. My list so why is my list bad if it includes stuff from your list? A gun wont necessarily get me killed.

Expect to take small game with a sling shot? Maybe if you are shooting lg ball bearings, but doubtful rocks will have enough accuracy to be reliable...

A kiddie BB-gun will work though. Something like a lever-cocking Daisy with a 500capacity reservoir you fill at the muzzle. It's a close-range proposition, but so's a slingshot.

Got some bucks? A .177 barrel-cocking pellet rifle is a real tool for killing small game. RWS-Diana model 34 is a great tool. Buy several tins of 500ct pellets either RWS or Beeman and you have something to work with. Can even put a real scope on these and you've got a real small game gathering machine... Great for killing rats, mice, vermin, and also game up to rabbits. Headshot is very reliable and easy to make if you can shoot.

Any meds would be good to trade, Cigerettes, Liquor, Weed, Cocaine. Water is the most important thing to have stored or to secure a source of clean water. Water purification tablets, Iodine.

I agree for the most part. Birds and some small game might be easy to knock out with a slingshot. Pellet guns are ideal for most small game. My 30-30 would blow most small game into little bits and pieces.

Guns and Bullets period. I don't like the idea a bit but if you got guns and bullets all the other stuff comes along one way or another.

Uh huh. Until you run up against someone who already has all of it,....because he's already planned and worked toward it - and HIS plans already include methods for dealing with trashy, worthless scum like you. And, he and his cohorts have a lot more practical application/experience at actually doing the job, than you.

I almost look forward to the first pack of assholes like you that make that fucking mistake.

I've got hundreds of quality knives. If you don't have a sharp knife when the shitters hits you're screwed. I figure I'll be able to barter them off for anything I may need. You know food, water, ammo, bj's , you name it. I'll be the knife merchant of the apocalypse.
