Forget the Resume/Office/Paycheck System of Getting a Job..Create Your Own Job!
We all know that the unemployment rate is much higher than what the Vichy media is telling us. Maybe you are unemployed or maybe you are retired and just need to supplement your income due to inflation. I think that we have to start thinking of ways to make money circumventing the usual channels of the office/resume/paycheck route. Here are some ideas to make money off the gird or even on the grid but outside of the system.

I must be lucky than, Im 25 and I've never had trouble finding employment, and I've been working since 14. I've never went more than a month without a job in all that time.
I suffer from Pronoia I have the suspicion the Universe is a conspiracy on my behalf.

I totally agree with you. Especially young people, I think, need to start thinking outside the box. I have two stepsons ages 16 and 23. The 23-year-old couldn't afford college and has gotten himself a job, but still thinks of going back to college and study psychology, which I think is a colossal waste of time and money in this kind of economy. After he gets out of college, he can consider himself lucky to get a property maintenance job -- the same job he has now -- only with the difference of $100,000 in student loans on his back. I told him that he should take a thousand dollars, buy a open-ended round-trip plane ticket to Europe or somewhere and go see the world. Meet foreign cultures and mentalities, learn foreign languages, and work for food and shelter as long as you can. Get a vision of what you really want to do with your life, and then come home and do what you really love.

I think in this crappy economy (which I'm convinced will last many more years), you need to become inventive. IMO, that's ten times better than any 9-5 job sitting in a cubicle day in and day out anyway. My own son is only 8, but I cringe inside imagining him in the said cubicle slaving away in corporate America... and for what? All I want for him is to be happy. That might not involve getting rich, but a fulfilled life is a wealthy life, in my book.

Recently, for example, there was a couple of puppeteers in residency at my son's school. They stayed for 10 days and taught the kids to make puppets and stage plays, etc. At lunchtime, the guy would break out his guitar and entertain the kids with songs while they were eating. I'm pretty sure those guys weren't wealthy or even well off, but boy, did they look happy. That's really all I want for my kid -- money be damned.

I actually love being "unemployed". I was laid off from a high tech company five days before my wedding day. Best thing that could have happened to me. Have been self-employed for 10 years and the freedom is amazing.

Voila!

I did and it's been working for me for five years. Self-employed and lovin' it!

Re: Forget the Resume/Office/Paycheck System of Getting a Job..Create Your Own Job!
I've become self-employed for the first time in my life in the past year. I'm doing fairly well, for a new business. I also homeschool my children, and am instilling this notion in their minds as well. I think the days of going to college and securing a well paying job are over. Entrepreneurship, self employment, finding an unfilled need or creating an economic niche is key in this economy and for the future. My daughter is 12 and has already sold some of her handmade goods on etsy. My son, I think I'm going to start by teaching him to repair bicycles and lawnmowers and see where he goes from there. The old paradigm, the things we thought were guaranteed when we were growing up, are sadly gone IMO.

Funny, I responded before reading the articles. The things she suggests for cottage industries are some of the things we already do.

Growing heirloom starter plants that grow well in your climate is a great one. The nurseries do not usually have such varieties in stock. You can do research at your country's agricultural extension website and find out which varieties have tested well in your climate. Also, for people that live in areas experiencing climate change, finding heirloom varieties that will do well in your new climate is a great idea.

We also just bought supplies for making soap. Making soap is great because it's something everyone uses. It's easy to market and sell, though there is a significant learning curve to this craft.

If you have the motivation, you can often find people in rural areas who shear sheep. Many people just throw away the wool because there is not a ton of demand for raw fleece. If you're down for the hard work, you can acquire these fleeces dirt cheap or free in shearing season, clean and card the fleece yourself, and sell it to people who spin wool, needle felt, make felt, etc.

Re: Forget the Resume/Office/Paycheck System of Getting a Job..Create Your Own Job!
This is going to be a big "dimensional shift" in our future thinking,,,,,not necessarily making money "off the grid", but just making a good living in our current economic system. The old way of choosing a career is over, simply because the vast majority of good paying jobs from the 1950's until now are gone. Just getting a college degree guarantees nothing, so to just tell kids to listen to their guidance counselors and get a degree is no guarantee for prosperity.

I have a very entrepreneurial mindset (I'm actually a consultant in the health care field) so I am constantly seeing opportunities that most people miss,,,,mainly because they are too busy bitching about how things suck now.

Worth a look is the book "A Whole New Mind"... [link to www.amazon.com] .. which discusses why the future here in the US is with 'right brain thinkers' as oppossedd to left brainers which were the knowledge workers---accountants, doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. One great piece of info to take from this book is, anyone contemplating a career, or a career change must address these four items.... "Can computers do it faster? Can overseas labor do it cheaper? Are your skills in demand? Are your skills overly abundant?"

Right brain thinkers have a MUCH easier time seeing the 'big picture' in business, personal life, etc, than left brainers that have been taught you must follow exactly what you have been taught,,,no thinking outside the box (engineers, accountants, doctors, etc.). As they are going down their mental 'checklist' of items, a right brainer, in most cases, has already seen the big picture and is working on the solution. I've experienced this many times in the business world, and can be very frustrating when you already know the answer, but the left brainer has to go through ALL the steps before they will agree...

Yes. I have a very hard time convincing some unemployed
friends to go outside the normal route.

"Still can't find a job, not even replying to resume at all"
"Have you been posting on craigslist services and looking at
gigs as I suggested"
"Once or twice"

Don't know why they put so much effort into the route that
won't work, but give up on the alternative when it doesn't
work the first time they try it.

Post with everything you can do, respond to everything you
can do. You'll get something pretty soon. A little thing
often grows into something big.

Well I am a beadwork artist and have a roomfull of beads so whatever I make in effect is making something for nothing. I also have an urban garden so cant grow enough food to sell but sell lots of plants. I live bottom floor of a brownstone and one day I was cooking callalloo with windows open and my bell rang and was someone asking what amazing smell was. This launched another side hustle of selling food. Right out of my house and I have a few catering gigs too.

This is exactly what I started doing just after the beginning of the year. I learned how to make soap, knit, and crochet last fall and winter, and now I have a small but growing business.

Saw the first proof of jobs opening up after that new law passed here in Alabama yesterday. There was a notice of farms across the state looking to hire farm hands to the tune of 600 jobs to start. Little Brother was quick to call. He's been hunting odd jobs for months now after getting laid off, even shooting coyotes and selling the pelts during the leanest times. (Local wooded areas are overrun, and they're starting to get more aggressive. It's a control program.)

He's been training in farm work and small engine repair since he was about 10, and horse husbandry for the past six or seven years. This'll give him the chance to put those years of experience to use without having to find a way to get his own land, or waiting to inherit the homestead, which wouldn't happen as things stand now anyway.

Been trying to get Hubby to do this for years. He's too paranoid to try. He's convinced every single post on Craig's List is a scam. Yes, there are a lot of them on there, especially MLMs and folks looking to get writing done for "exposure," but it's up to the reader to work out what's a scam and what's not.

He's content instead to complain about how his boss is a paranoid crybaby, the school doesn't pay teachers as much as they'd pay a receptionist, and it's so poorly run he's going to stress himself into near constant seizures. rolleyes

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." -- Galatians 5:14-26

I must be lucky than, Im 25 and I've never had trouble finding employment, and I've been working since 14. I've never went more than a month without a job in all that time.

From age 19 through 28 me either then it all went to crap and can't keep a job no matter what I do because people do not like hiring nor keeping employees like they used to. These days they try to find reasons to get rid of you unlike back in the day when they would instead try to find a reason to KEEP you.

Back in the day you would work for an employer til you retired and they kept you onboard unless you did something really bad or didn't show up for a few days.

Nowadays it's as if employers are scared of keeping their employees around for more than five years. There is no family like structure no seniority no becoming a part of the company.

The only thing out there is head-hunters and temp jobs constantly finding yourself unemployed and in need of money.

btw, if anyone needs web hosting with good support I'm selling it starting at $2/mo paid annually. hf
