Saw the same kind of clouds (maybe same ones) over here in Palm Springs.

Yes! Greasy looking!

Different shades of metallic dark gray to silver - flattened, and sometimes with a convex (bump) on the upper side.

The only other way to discribe them is imagine a can of oil based paint -
poured into water
and then brushed horizontally

making different elongated sweeps of varied colors and thicknesses

i believe you. i see the upper atmosphere clouds on the iss live feed that much time it doesn't even look like earth, more like a lavenderish jupiter. figured they would start getting weird down here and i have seen a few threads about them lately.
