Re: oh oh EL HEIRRO volcano energy building realyl fast!!1
The energy released by little boy in hiroshima:

6.3 x 10^13 J

El Heirro:

8.4 x 10^11 J

(8.4 x 10^11) / (6.3 x 10^13) = 0.0133

Only 1.33% energy of little boy, nothing to worry about (yet).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1697987

Dumb comparison in relation to the thread.
Energy release in Hiroshima was dissipated in solid and air, the fluid displacement caused by energy dissipated by the mass of a landslide is the risk, not the primary effect of the El Hierro energy itself.

It's like saying the risk of a skin burn from the gunpowder explosion of a bullet in a gun some distance away is nothing to worry about, just as the resulting projectile rips a hole through your abdomen.

I'm not a volcano guy, I don't know squat about them, how high in numbers must that go before I carry a spare pair of underwear around with me?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1371470

It's always a good idea to just carry a spare set anyway. Especially in this day and age.
 Quoting: Rev_Mikey13

Good point, the reason is in NYC, I suppose an earthquake and some sort of tidal wave would ensue over here? I wonder how much time hours wise until either 1 foot or 100 feet high crosses the pond and arrives here in NYC? Anyone know that approximate figure in hours, I hope it is hours? How fast can a dang wave travel? Thanks!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1371470

We will have approximately 6 to 7 hours before the tsunami reaches NYC and the East Coast. But if the eruption happens and slide happens during the night when we are sleeping we may NOT know or find out about it fast enough and we will have no time at all to flee.

Approx time of Eastern Seaboard impact after volcanic induced landslide, 8 hours.

Edit to add that if half the volcano plunges into the water, it is not unreasonable to expect a tidal wave in excess of 100 feet.
 Quoting: Apocalypse Troll

Thanks very much, 8 hours is a great lead time to head west to the Pocono Mountains or north to the Catskills and Adirondacks.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1371470

I agree, IF we hear about the eruption and slide EARLY on. WHAT if it happens when we are sleeping? You KNOW the authorities will NOT announce anything, due to fear of mass hysteria. We New Yorkers, NEED to find a way to get the alert EARLY enough so can flee to higher ground.
Any one got any ideas?

Yes, someone I think last week posted an updated earthquake list for the last 25 years or so and it looks the same way increasing as we get towards today although it is bumpier along the way.

i use that. costs 29 euros a year, and primarily warns of EQ generated tsunami.

can be a pain if a tsunami is generated in Alaska, at 3am, but if you LIVE in Alaska? I've been woken lots of times, early in the morning by these alerts.

I think they will broadcast an alert in the event of a landslide generated tsunami. in fact I'm certain they will.

now it's up to you. 29 euros, for peace of mind?

in the unlikely event of something like this actually happening, if it happens in the day, you're pretty much boned, because EVERYONE will get the warning, and the roads will be crammed within ten minutes, BUT if it happens in the dead of night, you and your family can be hitting the high road, while everyone sleeps.

this warning system is invaluable imho.

worth it for a few euros, i say.

Re: oh oh EL HEIRRO volcano energy building realyl fast!!1
Back in the mid 90s, my mother, who then lived in Jacksonville FL was faced with evacuating her oceanside condo before a hurricane.

She was in her late 70s, so friends came by the pick her up and leave the area. It's usually a 25 min drive into the city itself. That day it took 5 hours because everyone else had the same idea.

Then it took another 4 hours to make it across the state towards the motel they'd booked. If the silly hurricane had followed it's supposed path, they'd have been in huge trouble.

Needless to say, she never evacuated the condo again. She'd rather die in the place than sit in gridlock (with no available toilets).

wonder how much you can trust these instant tsunami alerts??

I also wonder if anyone knows how far inland the tsunami would go on the east coast? 10 miles, 100 miles...200 miles??? Anyone have any idea?

the one i posted that you subscribe to is very good. normally, about 15-20 mins after the quake, the alert goes out.

they're based in Germany too, so not much chance of them getting knocked out by a wave first.

'I also wonder if anyone knows how far inland the tsunami would go on the east coast? 10 miles, 100 miles...200 miles??? Anyone have any idea?'

depends on local topography.

try not worrying about it too much. these things are HIGHLY unlikely, but POSSIBLE events.

just keep informed.

I read somewhere that it would go maybe 25+ miles inland. I'm in NW GA and I'm not sure if I need to worry about getting wet from this but it never hurts to be prepared and no where to go. I would probably head up to Helen GA for a day or two and just claim that I wanted to go to Octoberfest and sample some good beer.

The Bahamas shield you from this.

If it even reached across the Atlantic.

What if the mountain didn't slide instantly into the ocean, or slowly? If it sank at all.
