Interesting. Thanks for the link and your input :) You sound like you aren't bothered at all by Uncle Sam wanting to look at your buying habits and a closer look into how you live. Are you public sector or do you work for a government agency? I'm not trying to come off nosey, just trying to understand your willingness to divulge so much personal information and devote so much time to an agency. Most people here on GLP are against government information digging/procuring/surveying/etc. It's kind of viewed as an invasion of privacy.

To me it seems if they want to survey CPI they can just look to the stores for the answers. What are people buying, what are they charging, etc. The economy is in the pooper, I don't think they need my financial information and spending habits to help determine that. I actually still contribute to the economy and spend more freely than most these days. I would probably be the black sheep in the survey, LOL.

For anything other than positive things that happen to people who are deserving of only positive things. This applies to all of those out there in the world as well.

Some things just are not right, even if they are challenges that we meet head on and come out strong on the other side of.

Another group of Economic Assistants from BLS collect the CPI data. They physically go into the stores and record the prices of goods and services every month. The Consumer Expenditure Survey collect the spending habits of consumers based on demographics, income etc.

This is your opportunity to ask how they can justify a CPI that does not track the cost of food and energy two of the four biggest expenses of most households. Tell them to take fifteen minutes and explain that.

I don't believe they were targeting me. I'm just cautious. As a single parent, I tread cautiously with things like this. You never know who is legit and who isn't and besides, there are just some things I don't feel I need to divulge to people. I just feel what I spend my money on is my business. I guess I could ask them to tell me what they spend their allocated money on each quarter or year. LOL. Turning the questions around on them would likely throw them off. I can picture the look on their faces right now :) HAHA.

It's about time we turn the tables. Perhaps anybody who receives one of these pain in the ass letter should send it back, along with a note....something to the effect of this:

"Dear Census Bureau,

It is with a minimal level of regret and sorrow that I must inform you that I can not participate in this program as requested. As a regular person with a modest income, I think very carefully and carefully plan in order to stretch every dollar I spend as far as I can.

However, I think it would be a *great* idea for the federal government to start keeping a daily log of spending that would account for each and every spent. No program or funds shall be exempt. It will help the people understand how our money is spent, and will enable us to submit ideas and allow you to finally be accountable to the people for the wasteful spending of our money.
The records of such a program will be published each day for the previous days spending.

Failure to do so will result in a daily fine of $2,500 per worker-bee household in this country.

We thank you in advance for your time and cooperation with this new program.

I believe everything happens for a reason. I got hurt at work a year ago November and because of the nature of the break and the way it happened, I have to believe this is part of God's master plan for me right now. Not sure why i'm going through this, but (and it's a big BUT) I have to stay grounded in my faith that He has a plan. I certainly would have preferred to live my life the way I normally would have this past year and done fun things with my children but that wasn't in the cards this year.

It's okay though. I am a strong woman and strong in my faith, as are my children. I refuse to allow myself to wallow in my sorrows and have a daily pity party. Don't get me wrong, it sucks beyond belief but I have two small children to care for and they keep me going each day with motivation for the next :)

They are legit. They will show you their Government ID. Most are part time workers. Names and addresses are removed from all forms, and are not included in any statistical release

You would think though that they could get this some other way. I know the government has access to our spending. I just don't want to know about it!
