Has anyone eaten fox ? genuine question.
I was brought up on the law "what you kill, you eat"

This stopped us taking pot shots at song birds and cats etc
but the odd squirrel and pigeon were nice additions to the family meals.

I am in an inner city area ( Doncaster, south yorkshire) and my veg garden in being raided and dug over by foxes.

Yes I am happy to "euthanise" LOL them but could i eat them ?

Do any of you regularly eat fox ?
I would like to try, are there any health dangers ?

I would like the input from ANY hunters.

Many thanks,
Julie

Re: Has anyone eaten fox ? genuine question.
you can eat it, not different from plains indians eating dog. but i sure in hell won't eat it, to many other good things to eat. and by the way if the animal has rabies you will catch it from skinning and preping it, but when its cooked the virus will be dead and the meat will be safe to eat

Re: Has anyone eaten fox ? genuine question.
I am not a muslim, so i dont follow their food code.
I am not a jewish so ditto.

What I am is a regular person who cannot afford to let animals destroy my garden.

IF these animals are good to eat then I will happily harvest them.

I am NOT a touchy feely animal "rightist" BUT if there is no good eating i would rather scare them away.

THAT SAID.

Should fox be cooked like squirrel (quick fried) or treated like Hare? Hung and aged untill palatable ?

Again I am serious here folks.
Thanks

Fox can be eaten. But they're omnivores, so you should cook it for a long time to get rid off of parasites - not sure, but I think 3h will do.

I've heard that it tastes really strong. I dunno if it's actually legal to kill them for food though.

Re: Has anyone eaten fox ? genuine question.
Gut, skin, and cut up the fox, just like you would any other small game.

Brine the meat for twelve hours prior to cooking by whatever method you prefer. Make brine from water, salt, and other seasonings. Make sure the meat is submerged.

The brine soak removes the gamey flavor and helps tenderize the meat.

Thanks!

I know fox hunting (foxes, hounds and members of parliament) etc are illegal (grin)

BUT (and thanks for noticing a distinction) I have a feral inner city fox destroying my veg garden.

I HAVE to get rid of it, IF i kill it I would prefer to eat it.

Thanks so much !!

Length of cooking is less important than temperature. Use a meat thermometer or follow a recipe.

Brilliant , Thank you!

In the UK we hang game for a week or so instead of brining but simply brilliant. Thanks.

I will try this and thank you so much!

The hunting rules are complex as hell anyway, and very few people are ever charged under them, so I wouldn't worry too much lol.

I'm a vegetarian, doesn't like cruelty to animals.. but foxes are not cuddly loving pets, are on a genocide mission against hens (& our eggs for breakfast!), & they wander round late at night in the city just making a mess, standing in the middle of the road & are a potential danger & a menace. I've seen what foxes are capable off at first hand. I say lift the ban on fox hunting & kill them all.. well.. most..of the them.

Soak meat in a half and half vinegar bath with water for twelve hours with garlic and tomatoes, this tenderizes and begins building flavor. Always add plenty of black pepper as it cooks to add to overall flavor. Cook at 200* at four to five hours , but add more garlic turning often. Fox is a tough meat that needs special considerations, but like venison, is well worth the effort.

Re: Has anyone eaten fox ? genuine question.
The native people in Alaska still live off the land (and sea) in many areas. They eat mostly a meat and fish diet, but I've never heard of them eating fox even though there are lots of foxes around. In fact I asked someone who is from one of those areas and he said maybe the interior Indians do because they don't have much else, but apparently it's not that good but won't hurt you if you eat it, unless it has rabies, maybe that is why people don't eat them.
