To put this crazy number into prospective.

Every banana has about 1.5becquerels each. From radioactive potassium (look up banana equivalent dose.)

In 2005 alone the total US imports for Bananas was 33,796 million tons.

Or 74507432148800 pounds of bananas.

Assuming each banana is on average 0.33lbs each - you can say that is approximately 223,500,000,000,000 becquerels imported every year just from bananas.


That's right - every year the US IMPORTS 223 TRILLION becquerels - in bananas alone - not to mention all the nuts, fruit, smoke detectors and other products that contain low sources of radioactive substances that are imported every year.

ZOMG over 223 trillion becquerels!


It really does well to put things into prospective doesn't it?


Am I trying to downplay the seriousness of Fuku? No.
I'm just trying to prevent the irrational panic of people seeing a big number and a term they don't know or understand.
