I like where I live, I get to see a lot of immigrant families and foreigners, lots of love and brightness surrounds their families. In America, it's all brats, arguing, and darkness, for the most part. I don't get it. It must be the pseudo-culture with no grounding, completely controlled by a cabal of bipolar psychos with strong sociopathic tendencies, sounds like most of us actually... Since you are so content with bashing your own country, I hear that Australia welcomes immigrants with open arms. This thread is useless and nothing more than an attempt to thrash America. And OP, AUSTRALIA will still be one of the least generous donors out of 22 of the world's richest countries by 2010 in helping charities including the aid to starving children. Why don't you do something about it OP? [link to www.brisbanetimes.com.au] I do what I can, I support and love my kids, I help others when I can and I am now trying to make people aware that there is a problem with society and the direction its heading in. Australia is only a few years behind being in the same boat as the US. Identifying the problem and making people aware may just help. It may be also be too late but information is never a bad thing as living in ignorance has put us in this situation in the first place. My sister lives in the US and I have been there several times. I love the place and the people that I have met but would still prefer to live here. There is no place like home. Australia is no Saint and we have major issues that need to be addressed. Without a functional family orientated society I feel we may all be lost and the game is over. There are some things we MUST to fight to protect. |

Quoting: EazyD You would think with the advantages and level of education of Americans they would have less to fear and more freedom to express themselves. Maybe this is not the case. Americans have been taught that neglecting their children is acceptable. I can't really put it any plainer than this, we're one or two generations away from losing civil society in this country because we might not be able to do a seemingly fundamental thing like raise enough healthy children, apparently by design. Sad but true I don't entirely agree with that. Teachers should be held accountable to some agree because kids are with them for most of the day 5 days a week. What do you do when kids run amok in class, just turn the other cheek? Used to be a teacher cared for and had some authority over kids. |

I strongly believe that you should be rewarded for your efforts and in that regard I am for the capitalistic model, But I also believe that everyone should have a fighting chance. Young children have little choice but to be at the mercy of circumstance. This is not their fault!! and sometimes we need to step in and protect the ones who cant protect themselves. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1349914 United States 10/18/2011 05:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And every other country keeps records the same exact way, right? I mean, there are absolutely no differences in what is reported, what is not, and what is considered to be death from child abuse? Quoting: Anonymous Cowherder Standards have to be the same or comparison is inaccurate. 3 times the rate of Canada!!! Are you saying they don't keep accurate records. More likely to be more accurate as they have better funding! NO they do not keep better records! I lived in Nova Scotia for 8 years, and that province has the highest rate of sexual assault...and the police believe it is even higher but the CULTURE of rural Canada is to keep problems in the family and avoid bringing in outsiders even if it woudl help. Fewer than one in ten sexual assault victims report crime to the police, but the numbers reported are already huge so I can only imagine how bad it really is: [link to www.statcan.gc.ca] Sadder still is that the conviction rate is even lower I believe it is like this with other family crime as well, because of the inherited shame based British "stiff upper lip" culture and the strong need to maintain appearances in small, narrow minded provincial areas with low populations...which describes much of rural Canada. I didn't believe it when I first moved to Canada, as I had started off as a pretty liberal American who moved to get away from George Bush, and I seriously believed all these other countries were more advanced than the US in many ways After nearly ten years, I have moved back to the US, because I realized that the rosy outside picture of many countries - not just Canada - is a result of different forms of reporting, and the fact that their news stories and history are not plastered all over the internet the way American issues are. I have come to realize that we Americans are better at exposing our major flaws in public than any culture I know of, and my mother was from South America and I have cousins in Europe, half of South America and some in the Caribbean. Over time I have come to realize that many "developed" cultures are deeply shamed based, or have a "stiff upper lip" approach to life deeply ingrained from childhood. In the US, perhaps a result of the 'let it all hang out' 60s and 70s, we analyze ourselves to death on a global stage. Americans openly admit, examine and agonize about our issues, and as a result the world thinks we have more of them. However, as I now realize, because we acknowledge them we also have a chance at fixing them. I was a little shocked in Nova Scotia, where I lived, at the number of people I met who told me they had been beaten as children, hit with belt buckles. A dozen or so actually showed me scars on their heads and bodies, almost proud of what they had endured. It was odd. However, if you do a search on the internet, you will find very little about it on the net, unless you know how to search. Stories from the US are much easier to find, more clearly indexed. In Canada, if you bring up some of these things, even if you're Canadian you are hushed up and told to stop bashing Canada, so the message is clear: don't mention the problems, don't make Canada look bad (esp to Americans, lol) Pesky facts, like the fact that primogeniture still was in effect in many Provinces well into the last century, are buried on sites that don't contain a single mention of the word "Canada", and don't have the .ca ending...lol. [link to socyberty.com] I didn't know, for example, that in Canada women were not considered "persons" until deep into the 20th century, and that Canada ranks 50th, behind Rwanda and Afghanitsan as far as women in public office or even executive business positions ( [link to www.thestar.com] ) These were minor details which my US media sources I apparently had missed. I sure wish I had known these things before uprooting myself and getting residency, only to arrive in a place which is extremely unwelcoming to visible minorities and has few chances for advancement for women. I had to find it out after having endless doors slammed in my face... Stories about Africville, the shameful treatment of the Aboriginals, the rise of Aryan Nations in Alberta, or even how jazz legend Oscar Peterson returned to his home in Toronto after years in the US, only to be subjected racially harassed in a way that reminded him of 1950s America, somehow are downplayed, unless you are living in Canada in tune. So yes, it is an issue of reporting, and you, my friend, should get a better hobby than focusing on the flaws of the USA, because as you yourself acknowledge, Australia has a huge number of issues (It is considered even more sexist and racist than Canada, and that is from Canadians I know). Personally, I am back in the US, and I wish I had those years of my life back, but I have learned something very important: not to trust the US media, mainstream or even "alternative" and leftist, as they lie like dogs. I'm very glad to be back here. Indeed there is no place like home, as flawed, problematic and screwed up as we may be. At least we're honest about the fact we have big problems, and I now realize that is a huge step in the right direction. In short, I wish I had the logging rights to the giant logs in the eyes of Australians, Canadians and countless Europeans regarding the issues they accuse the US of, which they ignore at home. |
