It says it doesnt affect humans. Just killing off fish. Sad. I believe viruses are housecleaners, not the cause. They are created by disease.

It says it doesn't affect humans. they left off the "yet." It will be months or years before it affects humans. Consume the fish, nothing to worry about.

If you take time to read it all, yes it states that it is non infectious to humans but if all wild salmon die we have to eat their genetically altered fish...broccoli

Just saying maybe its a made virus that came from labs in Europe. A little to much freedom over there lol... Ex: wikileaks

Immunity is a system in all animals including fish that helps the body, balance and that keeps the animal from getting virus' and disease. I believe one of the unfortunate symptoms of radiation poisoning is that it depresses the immune system thereby allowing virus's to take hold. When the virus is done the leftover effect is bacteria infection which then is the real killer and will destroy entire populations. This is only the beginning. I have been noticing an uptick in pup immunity problems on the west coast in the last two months. Anyone with puppies should be careful where they play.. in the yard after a rain is the worst. Btw Fish that are surface dwellers like Salmon will be the first Tuna much deeper swimmers. Sharks will be next.. then Dolphins and Orca..
Looks like Seals and Walrus are sick and dying too.. look at this link.. and oh it isn't Global Warming.. that is a total crock!

I suppose the people of Japan will also suddenly start to get ill from a mysterious virus....especially those who live near to Fukushima

It is a very sad day when you have to check the fish with a Geiger counter
before you dare touch it...let alone eat it shitstream

Oh! well this is what happens when certain people think it is perfectly fine to use the worlds seas and oceans as a toilet to flush away their nuclear waste.

Re: A lethal and highly contagious marine virus has been detected for the first time in wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest
I think you all are blowing this WAAAAY out of proportion. If you actually read the article thoroughly, you'll find that this is not a new virus. It's a virus we've known about for decades in one area that's been found to have spread to another. This virus is originally found in fish farms in Europe, Canada, and Chile. It has been known to kill at least 70% of their fish at a time.

Now, some more research would yield that this virus isn't very dangerous to any fish outside the the family Salmonidae.
Enveloped viruses like ISAV enter target cells by attachment to receptor molecules on the plasma membrane and this initial attachment determines the host range and tissue tropism of the virus
 Quoting: Virology Journal (2007)
[link to www.virologyj.com]

ISAV is "infectious salmon anemia virus" by the way. The virus in question in OP's article. If there are seals and sea lions dying, I highly doubt it's because of this virus.

So, yes, I do believe that this could turn into salmon doom, but I don't think that it's also tuna, baby seal, whale, human, etc doom.

It very well could impact the ecosystem if it gets out of hand, but I also have some sort of faith in mother nature. Where a niche is left open, another opportunistic species will take it's place eventually.

Re: A lethal and highly contagious marine virus has been detected for the first time in wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest
Another thought, though. This disease has been found in salmon fisheries and has been wreaking havoc, correct? Why do you think that is? These fish are raised swimming side by side. Constant contact, no space. No wonder the virus spreads like wildfire!

Ok, so this virus has been found in the open waters now. The more I think about it, the more I believe the wild populations have much more of a chance. While they do tend to school, the sick ones are more likely to get picked off. It's anemia for goodness sakes! The disease is gonna slow the sick ones down, and they're more likely to be killed off. I'm not saying there's no chance of infection of other fish, just that because of the open water, and the actual process of predation, this disease has more chance to be controlled than in a predator-less fishery.

Food for thought.

I don't need to do "some research" as I already know. Salmon offshore the Pacific coast of North America do not travel to Japan or vice versa. Salmon exist in Japan but they are genetically distinct from the kind we have in North America.

Tell you what - if you can show me the "research" that led you to believe that Japanese salmon are making their way to N. America I will look at it.

This virus has already made its way through the Atlantic ocean and while it hurt farmed salmon quite a lot, wild salmon tend to shake it off better probably because they are not confined.

It's always WONDERFUL advice to hug your puppies! Who wouldn't want to hug their puppies? You should be doing that every day, for that matter! There's no guarantee for tomorrow. You could die from an embolism or car accident today for all you know. None of us know.

The information you just told me above this post makes no coherent sense with the conversation at hand. Viruses fascinate me, and I have a pretty good understanding of how they work. And this ISAVirus in question has NOTHING to do with the Fukushima incident.

I'm serious! Enlighten me why what you just said was relevant! I'm not trying to be a shill, just adding to the conversation (and critical thinking) at hand.
