I think you all are blowing this WAAAAY out of proportion. If you actually read the article thoroughly, you'll find that this is not a new virus. It's a virus we've known about for decades in one area that's been found to have spread to another. This virus is originally found in fish farms in Europe, Canada, and Chile. It has been known to kill at least 70% of their fish at a time.

Now, some more research would yield that this virus isn't very dangerous to any fish outside the the family Salmonidae.

ISAV is "infectious salmon anemia virus" by the way. The virus in question in OP's article. If there are seals and sea lions dying, I highly doubt it's because of this virus.

So, yes, I do believe that this could turn into salmon doom, but I don't think that it's also tuna, baby seal, whale, human, etc doom.

It very well could impact the ecosystem if it gets out of hand, but I also have some sort of faith in mother nature. Where a niche is left open, another opportunistic species will take it's place eventually.

sadly another fail I feel....... it's warming up and has nothing to do with the weather....

to add to that the salmon were a concern months ago as they migrate to the US West Coast from the seas of Japan....

Enveloped viruses like ISAV enter target cells by attachment to receptor molecules on the plasma membrane and this initial attachment determines the host range and tissue tropism of the virus

As a marine biologist who studied marine mammals specifically, the radiation from Fukushima will have an effect on the marine mammals by lowering their immune system functionality, so the virus will be able to have a stronger effect. The St. Lawrence Estuary belugas are a perfect example of this, they live in water so contaminated by heavy metals, radiation, and cyclic compounds (like DDT), that it's amazing they don't glow in the dark! If the virus is in salmon then it stand to reason that whales like orcas and other toothed whales who survive on the fish will get a major dose of the virus and as the radiation spreads through the food chain lower immunity will definitely cause problems. The virus may not have a direct effect on the whales, but it WILL affect their prey. No salmon, fewer whales and more predation on marine mammals like sea otters and seals. Just food for thought.....

It's always WONDERFUL advice to hug your puppies! Who wouldn't want to hug their puppies? You should be doing that every day, for that matter! There's no guarantee for tomorrow. You could die from an embolism or car accident today for all you know. None of us know.

The information you just told me above this post makes no coherent sense with the conversation at hand. Viruses fascinate me, and I have a pretty good understanding of how they work. And this ISAVirus in question has NOTHING to do with the Fukushima incident.

Re: A lethal and highly contagious marine virus has been detected for the first time in wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest
Yes, it's sad. As a marine biologist and a conservationist with a soft spot for marine mammals I definitely don't like seeing how human actions have really stacked up and hurt the environment. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, I despise the fact that I'm worried about giving my son ANY sea fish at all--given the facts I know. I wish there was more I could do, but I guess for now I have to just try and raise awareness that what goes on in one place will eventually affect ALL of us who live on this earth.

Thanks by the way for bringing this up! I appreciate being able to talk about this with people who care what is going on in our world!

Hey now cool off. Just curious, what part of Japan are you from? Despite what's going on over there, my husband and I would love to visit one day...

Sorry my friend, i refuse to talk about Japan anymore, its pointless around here. Its best you take what ever you hear on this forum and shit yourself with fear.

Actually, I refuse to take anything I hear at just face value. There are few things that make me "shit with fear". We're all gonna die one day, anyway. Might as well get in what you want to do, and for me, that's visit Nippon! ^_^

Youd love it!

I don't know what I can do to help, but I'm glad I could make you smile. I'm sure there are people who care all over the world, it's just a matter of finding who is serious about this and who can do something about it. I can give you some ideas maybe of who to apply to, people who might support some action, but as for myself I'm just a stay at home mom with some knowledge---that's all. :)
