ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
hey guys

i know its not really conspiracy

but its doom in a way lol

6 years ago i crashed my motorbike, broke my shin about 2 3rds the way down , clean break , both bones tib and fib

they put a bar down inside my shin , from knee to ankle roughly , and then put a screw through the top , and 2 at my ankle

now ive broken bones before and theyve healed ok , afterwards, theyre good as new, if a bit lumpy bumpy

howver this fucking leg is ALWAYS sore , i am getting more pain from the screws and rob , than from the actual crash

i was wondering if any of you have had this operation and had a similar experience

or if any of you have had your rod and screws removed , as id like to, and if it helped any ??

rock on dudes !!

My ex-husband had an injury like that when he was about 27.
His foot was broken as well.
The pins in the ankle area gave him years of grief and a few times he wanted the pins removed because he wanted relief from the constant ache.

We were broke and had no insurance so he never did get them removed.

Thing was, he was a surfer and it only bothered him in real cold water. He smoked alot of marijuana and took over-the -counter pain meds like Excedrine or Advil.

He's 62 now and he only feel the pins when he walks too much or goes surfing. He still surfs but only in warmer water.

i had a fibial "nail" after a break. had it in for about 3 years and then had it pulled. i was never perticularly sore while i had it, but i always babied it for some reason, mental issue im sure. anyways after having it pulled, i never think about it again. that is, until i rock my ankle bone on a sharp corner right in the middle of my scar tissue. dont know if that helped

i know nothing about this at all.

But I know Jesus can and does heal.

He can and does give answers about what to do in these situations.

I pray you get some relief and peace.

NO leg screws but I have 2 long ass screws put in when the foot surgeon decided to saw half of my heel bone and lower my arch then he put a rod with 2 screws onto the base of my big toe bone in the foot section.

Yes, I have had broken bones before too, both arms and one wrist. They healed lumpy but fine.

My foot is almost always killing me.
If I could afford to get the hardware removed I definitely would.
I live on Hydrocodone and hate it.

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
i'm 17, i broke my tib and fib last july, im going to have the titanium rod removed in september, so i can continue horse riding without having to worry about falling off and shattering my leg, (been riding since six weeks after my accident but have had to be careful) haha, doctors did say id never be able to ride or run again and were shocked when i could run 5months after, they did also say i was coping better than 4 other men that did the same thing, girl power! ;)

when i have the rod removed does anyone know about what will happen, eg. will i have to have it in plaster or will it just be a quick job and back to normal??
slightly scared

The first question is has the bone healed? If yes (Tib-fib fxs. with 15% nonunion rate) then surgery can be done to remove the rod.

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
The rod functions in some way as an energy shielding device. Once the rod is removed there is some weakness in the bone that should resolve in 6 weeks.
Removing a rod can be the simplest thing or like finding a need in a haystack. Bone overgrowth can make things difficult. Most patients are back walking quickly, strength takes longer.
If your pain is due to local causes by the rod this will help. If your pain is residual to soft tisse and bone injury, ????

Once rod is removed ambulatory assistance(crutch, cane) assistance is needed to prevent injury. As strength improves throw these away and activities are curtailed. You and your physician viewing the films have the best information. This all assumes the bone is healed .

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
I broke my ankle. Spiral fracture with a plate and six screws. My buddy is an orthopedic surgeon and offered to remove the stuff in his basement for free. I declined and still have the plate 15 years later. It aches slightly when its really cold out. Or if i whack it on something hard i'll go into a blasphemous rampage for 30 seconds. But other than that it's better than my natural ankle. In 10,000 years our survivors will dig me up and say whoa, they weren't as dumb as we thought.

If it's hurting you remove it. Simple answer. If you tell them it's causing problems they'll take it out and you can make payments if you dont have insurance. But if its bad now it will only get worse. Remove it.

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
I broke my ankle and didn't have the screws removed until a couple of years later. I highly recommend having them removed if you can. They cut into the same incisions on my ankle but it healed up quickly. The screws were bigger than I imagined. Two really long ones were criss-crossed across the top of my ankle. It feels a lot better since I got them taken out. If you wait too long the bone will grow over the screws, so have it done as soon as possible.

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
Hi there,

I have a tibial nail and a couple of screws.... it took over two years before I felt 'normal' again. The only time I feel anything different if when there is big atmo pressure differences. It feels hollow exactly where the break was, creepy feeling but so far no problems - always worried walking when I have that feeling - feels like my leg is not connected from below the break. Was hoping with time this will fade as the rest of soreness did.

I have been skiing and skating which doc told me would aggravate my screws and make me want to take them out. So far no problems in those area.

Just getting into regular skiing and wanted to see others opinions on removal of screws... 2.5 years in not so bad.

I was attacked by a crazy man in 2006 he tackled me twisting my left leg and breaking both bones right below left knee. I have 6 screws in knee a rod going down my leg with 3 more screws. It has been non stop pain since. I finally went to a Good Doctor at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and I will be getting them removed next week he said heal time is only 1 to 2 weeks (first surgery no weight on left leg for a year) I will let you know how it turns out. My advice is do research find a good DR don't go to just any orthopedic surgeon. Best of luck Sandy

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
I broke the tib/fib/ankle and had plate/7 screws...I also had the hardware taken out a year or so later. It did aggravate me, and winter, yeah, made my ankle/leg cold, could feel them. Fine afterwards.

Now, umpteen years later, it's ankle fusion time, and at my age, and the procedure, I don't know if they'll take the screws out again, sorta hoping they will, but not expecting it.

When you get older, you'll get severe arthritis in these joints and maybe have to have fusion or a full replacement. I'm just going w/fusion, because I don't want to go through this type of surgery again.

Nah, did not like the screws/plate, did feel them.
Now, on my recent x-rays, doctors can see where the plate was, and where some screws were on ankle, huge bone spurs, those are coming off too.

Yeah, if you can get the hardware out, go for it, may make things easier in future if you need further surgery. Unless you're older, my former surgeon said if I hadn't been so young, he would have left the hardware in. I am also small boned though, so.

I don't know about a rod? Ouch.

Re: ANYONE HERE HAVE TIBIAL NAIL / SCREWS IN LEG FOR BROKEN LEG ???
Broke my Tib skiing 10 years ago. Spiral fracture about 1 inch above ankle. Had the rod and four screws installed. I was on my feet in 4 weeks. Then, the screws in the ankle were bothering me so, they were removed after 2 years. It took almost 2 weeks to heal after they were removed. The rod still bothers me when the weather changes or i kneel down and bump a screw. I still ski, run and ride MX.
