The crash happened just before 7 p.m. The children were just steps ahead of two teenagers. They were all on their way home from El Dorado Park. It's a common route for the many kids who live in the area. According to investigators, a 78-year-old woman drove through the crosswalk, and hit the 3 younger girls. The car in the lane next to the elderly woman had stopped to let the children pass. For many people who live in the area, this tragic accident hits too close to home. They say they've been complaining about the intersection for years. "Cars do not slow down whatsoever," says Joseph Aranda. "People don't stop for the kids," Tonya Lepe adds. "I see cars speed by all the time," says Karolyn Stevens. Not even 24-hours after the accident, Action News caught cars speeding through the crosswalk. Neighbors say something needs to be done to make it safer. "We need a flashing yellow light here," Stevens says. "We need to protect our neighborhood and our kids. No family should have to go through this." "Even speed bumps." says Joleen Pettit. "There are too many kids that use this crosswalk, because the park is right there. There needs to be something there to make more drivers aware." That 78-year-old driver is from Henderson. She was not injured in the accident, and fully cooperated with police. I'm not sure what the cross walk laws are in NV, but I know what they are here in NYC where I live. I would imagine though that they would/should be the same across the whole nation, but one never knows. |

Truth will set you free John 8:32 They were not out alone. They were with two 13 year olds leaving a local park when they were run down. (My personal opinion is that 13 year olds are not responsible enough to care for younger children outside the home. Maybe at home for a short time is ok.) Yes, I do also feel bad for the 78 year old woman. She made a terrible mistake that she will have to live with for the rest of her life. It's really something anyone of us could have done in the moment not realizing just what was happening, and especially at that age, and in the semi dark. The mind is not as sharp as it was when younger, and that fraction of a second could have made the difference. I hold no ill feelings towards this woman, as I'm sure she was not intending to ever harm anyone... and especially little children! PLEASE NOTE: This happened at a cross walk coming out of the park. One car stopped and waved for the 5 children to cross. She was in the left lane, and the 78 year old woman passed in the right lane closest to the curb/side of the road where they were stepping off the curb to cross. According to what I got, she never even slowed down, and also, you should never pass on the right like that if someone is stopped in the left lane. Right lane is ok, but slow down, and proceed with caution! |

There were 2 teens a few feet behind them, in the same cross walk, and they were all near Dad's house. Maybe if the 78 year old had stopped at the crosswalk you wouldn't need to be worrying about her "ruined" life.... Where's your compassion for the true victims here?
