Do those big ass satellite dishes still work?
That you used to see people with in their backyards back in the day? I had a friend that had one of those things and could pick up every channel for free and commercial free. Do those sat dishes still work or are those days over with?

Couple of things ...

Those BIG dishes were used for lower frequencies than the smaller dishes you see today. You *could* use the big dish for higher frequencies if you replace the feed horn and associated electronics.

However ... The bigger the dish, the narrower the beam, so you'll be limited in what satellites your system can actually "see" - unless you have a way to rotate it.

Hope this helps. hf

I remember that his had a big arm on it that would rotate the dish. Can you still uncut tv, free with those things? Tired of commercials and paying for crap...

No, for that particular application size doesn't matter.

What does that mean? Does anyone know of a legit way to get free satellite aired by the channels? I remember back in the day that tv and programs could be picked up WITHOUT commercials, etc.

Dont need it anymore. Most of the channels went over to Ku from the C-band. They are found on the smaller dishes Galaxy 19 FTA sat systems such as sold by Rick's Satellite.

Huh???

All the old big dish satellite receivers were motorized and could move from satellite to satellite.

Yep, but it sounded like OP wanted to pick up a reflector from a surplus store or something...

Re: Do those big ass satellite dishes still work?
my 10ft dish still works great with a usb dvb-s2 tuner.
all computer controlled now.
all major networks free, no hack needed, only fox is low def, rest hd. u can iks dishnet for other channels, but it is not legal or safe. better off watch internet streams, no movie channels, but not many good movies out.

Yes they still work. But you won't be able to get scrambled channels without a Digicypher 2 board in the receiver. There are still plenty of "free" channels on them. Just not much that you would want to watch, unless you're into feeds...

You can use the buds for KU bands, as long as you have the dual lnb's on it.

Cheers!

Re: Do those big ass satellite dishes still work?
Google free to air television.
c band and ku bands, c big dish, k smaller, most smaller ones with rotatory and satellite finder complete system less than $200. USD

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Lot of education / pbs, channels, occasional "wild feed" where something like a game is being bounced off the satellite.

The best and most important part of free to air television is you get news from all over the usa, smaller cities, not just faux feeds, and talk spews.

Worth the $$ to anyone here, as would be HAM, or other uhf long range like boat radios, etc..
