Re: Microsoft to Windows XP: Please Die, Already!
I have used XPLITE (highly recommended) for a complete fresh clean install stripped of all the bloat.

Puppy linux kicks ass on older hardware. 700mhz full screen (hd-untested) video, office, all the media you could want. I use it on an old e-machine with a replaced motherboard as a little compact media interface between the LAN and a TV.

BSD is good after you get over the learning curve of installing software. As log as you stick to BSD repositories it just works like an old steel tank.

((X=many prefixes)) (X)buntu family is the best for a straight conversion to an alternate OS from someone that is used to Windows in my opinion.

Not taking into account tin-foil security(or worse).
Just usability for the noob.

Re: Microsoft to Windows XP: Please Die, Already!
I'll tell you what microsoft is afraid of:

There are tons of advanced software for XP, tips and tricks, patches, hacks, and more stuff of the sort that allows you to obtain nearly 100% control over the entire system. You can customize it down to the most obscure settings and files that microsoft wished that users would never find. Not only that, but activating XP with hacks is incredibly easy, although it doesn't matter anymore.

In XP you can use hacks to disable System File Checker. You can delete tons of useless files and applications and make your OS drive only 300 mb or less.

And there are so many obscure third-party applications that allow you to log and view all system events, access linux partitions, automate mouse clicks and keyboard events. I love Sandboxie, Total Uninstaller, etc. Are these in 7? Not sure. XP still has the biggest software base, and the highest compatibility with older apps. Anything you can think of, there is an app for it. You can do anything.

Now, I'm not willing to go through the trouble of finding the same power apps or compatible to run in 7. Why would I lose so much time? Besides, obviously 7 has even more hidden stuff, superfluous stuff and changed stuff so that users are again in the dark about how the system works. THIS is the reason they force us to change OS every few years: they try to SHUT OFF the lights (control) of power users and hackers so that they have to learn an entire new system. No wonder microsoft is so pathetic with all this appeal to home users: "hey look how xp is old. 7 is much better and trendy." Well, please define "better" sir. For me what makes an OS better is how much its legs are open for me to insert my control-freakish member.

Xp does run quad, doesn't run 64bit, most computers you find running XP fail to have pixel shading and various other graphics aspects to it.

On the right machine, Windows 7 runs smoothly, and runs so much faster than XP.

Half of the complainers when it comes to Microsoft technologies are the ones who have downloaded and install a half a dozen 'toolbars' and who surf unprotected, download porn video that is really a virus, and all of this other stuff. Trust me you do not need Bongo buddy and half of the other crap people install willy-nilly on their machine for 'free' or bundled with so called 'free' programs.

Viruses rarely just appear on a machine, the user has to do something to get infected.

Its not Microsoft's fault a person doesn't know how to use a machine.

XP is the past - get used to it, so to are mimeograph, telegraph, land lines, analog TV and lots of other things.

I have had windows 7 for nearly 2 years now, in all of that time it has only crashed once - and that was completely and totally my own stupid error when I was fiddling around with a program.

Nope.

You don't need any updates at all, they're all included in TinyXP.

Even IPv6.

As long as you use the right hardware, everything's fine.

And don't forget you can run Virtualbox within TinyXP, so you can run anything you like if XP becomes limited.

wut u say is not right m8, u do have 64bit xp, plz research before posting..
and the problem with win7 is not crashing, its that they hide and lock everything so u cant change or watch anything,
for sheeple like u thats nice, but when u know a little more about pc's (specially programming), then vista and win 7 just suck..
and o yea u clearly do not know how leaks and virusses/attacks work.., so plz stop talking about this,
2 examplkes for this:
1. first the virus/attack THEN the solution, how can a user avoid this?...
2. 1 tiny little update u didnt do in the smallest appl can make u insecure..,

and about the pixel shading, that directx and ur vid-card/driver, has nothing to do with win xp...,
i sat again u really don't know wut u talking about plz shu up..

Love Puppy...I have PuppEee dual booting alongside the XP Home that came with my Eee PC netbook...

DSL is the only OS I have ever contributed to, but it has not been updated since 2008...I still carry it on a Mini-CD when working on old hardware for people...

I have a soft spot for Mepis...I have that dual booting with XP Pro on a 3gz rig with 4gb of RAM...

I'll run XP as long as I run old hardware...

first of all i dont think linux xp or w/e os will stop the gov looking into ur pc/mac That would be naieve..
besides that, if u want to be secure to the rest of the world (to some extension... u will never be 100% secure)
don't even talk about windows... everybody knows linux/unix and mac are way more secure then windows..., why do u think most of the servers run linux/unix?... for fun?
I also don't think u do know what is happening in win7 beause they hidden and crypted alot to prevent this.., This is the big problem with windows, always was always will be.., xp is opener in this then win7..
and the term tin hat comes out of the poker rooms, plz let it stay there.., there is a dif. between paranoid and realistic...

Well, no.

It all depends on what services / processes you are running.

For Linux, go to the commandline and run TOP.

For XP, use these utils :
