Obama is Screwed: Third-Party 'Centrist' Likely Running in 2012
American voters have fired two modern presidents after just one term, Jimmy Carter in 1980 and George H.W. Bush in 1992. Both suffered because the economy was in poor shape, and both faced disaffection within their own parties. But there was another thing those candidates had in common: They both faced relatively strong third-party candidates in the November election.

John B. Anderson in 1980 and H. Ross Perot in 1992 both ran as independent centrists, and while they weren't the only reason the incumbents lost (Ronald Reagan won a majority of the popular vote in 1980), they were certainly a factor.

Until now, handicapping for next year's presidential election has focused on how President Obama might fare in a two-candidate race. Could Obama beat Mitt Romney? Rick Perry? Herman Cain? (In all three cases, the answer is probably yes.)

But there's likely to also be a wild card in this election. Americans Elect, a well-funded "virtual third party," plans to put a centrist presidential candidate on the ballot in all 50 states, and while he or she is unlikely to win the presidential election, the presence of a third candidate could still have a major impact on the outcome.

If a viable third-party candidate emerges, Obama wins re-election because votes will be taken from the republican candidate so Obama becomes much tougher to beat.

A third-party candidate assures another 4 years of Obama.

Not necessarily. It depends on who the third party person is. If somebody like Ralph Nader or Dennis Kucinich, for example, were to be nominated by this third party, it would favor the Republican.

not really.... you can't go by the clinton/perot example since that was pre-internet. after the first debate ross perot polled higher than both of the other candidates. it wasn't until tptb threatened ross perot's daughter that he pulled out of the race temporarily.

by the time his family talked him back into re-joining the campaign, the media had a field day calling him kooky. many people can't think for themselves and the media games worked.

can you imagine a three way debate with ron paul, obama and cain? or ron, obama, and mitt?

cain would be a nightmare for tptb and that is why he has no chance other than as a running mate. cain would divide the black vote, get the neocon vote and obama would get the communist vote and part of the black vote.

a strong third party candidate would do extremely well in this scenario. cain is weak when it comes to foreign policy and the economy... he still has no clue how the fed works even though he had a role with them for several years.

romney would also be a headache for tptb since he and obama share their similar communist health care plans. also, mitt supported the communist bankster bailout takeovers and we see how well that has all worked? LOL mitt is a liberal that has flip flopped on many important issues. ron will tear them up.

anyone that is falling for this 'no third party' media talking point is a fool and a gullible sheep.

Maybe enough people are pissed off with the corrupt assholes in DC that the third party candidate actually wins!

In each party there is probably about 25% blind fools that don't have the capacity to comprehend anything and vote blindly on their brainwashing background. Another 25% view themselves as party members but have the ability to realize that sometimes even their candidate isn't the best but will usually still vote for their party. The other 50% see themselves aligned with a party for the majority of their leanings but will vote across party lines. So there is enough votes out there from each party to pull it off.
