You can even can meats such as chicken, hamburger, bacon.
I have canned butter as well.
There are wars and rumors of wars and it is quite clear something is just over the horizon. I realize from spending several years on this board that most people are actually afraid to make the lifestyle changes that we discuss here.

Things like moving to the country, stockpiling food, security items, and prepping in general are fun to talk about but when push comes to shove most will do nothing.

With that in mind, it would be beneficial to begin a food storage program so your family can at least eat until you are overrun and killed, or forced into a FEMA camp due to lack of food.

If you wish, I can explain my methods of canning.
What I do is according to government guidelines so there is no danger when done properly.

As part of my research into history, I am appalled at how the resident populations are caught up in the middle of conflicts. The most common mindset I see in non-combatants such as farmers and city dwellers alike is that they actually believe they will be left alone by the invading force if they simply go on as normal and offer no threat to them.

I love canning food =)
I have a large metal storage rack in our basement for all my jars which are mainly jams, pickles, fruits and meats at the moment. I even recently canned meatloaf and it is surprizingly very good ;)

I am very interested in how to can meat. We are not able to eat anything but meat with no preservatives, and most all canned meat is junk meat, unless you pay a HIGH premium.

Canning meat is not a big deal. We can beef and moose, chickens, etc.
Also we make meat sauce and can it........ makes for quick lasagna, spaghetti or chili when you are busy.

Most people these days barely know how to get the plastic wrap off their store bought meal after they get it out of the cardboard box and stick it in the microwave or oven. :) Not that bad I know, but it is sad just how useless most people are now.

Re: It is time to start storing food for your family. Canning is easy and inexpensive
You need a pressure canner for canning meats and most veggies, not to be confused with a pressure cooker. You can cook in the canner but cant can in a cooker. They are at walmart for about 40 bucks for an inexpensive one, and they work fine. The larger they are the more they cost.

Walmart also had the best prices on jars and lids, although tractor supply and ace hdwr had decent prices too. You can also save any glass jar that the lids and rings fits and use them.

I am canning in jars with twist-off lids.
Do I have to submerge them in the boiling water (an inch or so?).
Or should they be standing half way or 3/4 in the water?

Thanks!

You definitely need a pressure cooker for vegetables and meat. You can use a boiling water bath canner for high acid foods like fruits, tomatoes and pickles. GET A BOOK AND STUDY. You could kill yourself and family if you do it wrong.

I am so lucky to live near a Hutterite colony.

Re: It is time to start storing food for your family. Canning is easy and inexpensive
Disclaimer up front- I am not a canning expert- probably still considered a novice. With that said, I have canned for about 2 years now (mostly veggies from my gardens- tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, strawberries, eggplant, etc)... and what I have concluded is that if you are growing your own veggies, canning is probably the way to go for preservation if you have the time and discipline to do it right. If, however, you are like most people, and are not gorwing your own food, then it makes little financial sense to buy veggies at the store and then can them. It if cheaper just to buy the canned goods from the store.

Sure, home canning usually tastes better and is filled with less crap additives (btw, some of those are preservatives which increases shelf life), but if the window is rapidly closing on the time you have available to prep, you might be better off just buying pre-canned goods.

I think knowing "how" to can, and having the materials necessary to perform the process "if needed" is essential, so I certainly don't want to discourage you from trying your hand at it. Again, my recommendation is more for rapid supply building in light of the rapidly deteriorating conditions we are seeing.

Best of luck in your preps.

Keeping a large suply of food and water is good, but what happens when you run out of your food suply? You really need a lot of space to hold out for 6 months with a family of 5. You should really also learn to hunt, clean and butcher, if you dont already know how. That freeze dried or mre's will get to you after a week. Fresh meat is the way to go!! You can barter with meat, not dried eggs.
Also keep lots of booze in your storage for bartering!flag waver

Re: It is time to start storing food for your family. Canning is easy and inexpensive
I agree with the OP that now is definitely the time to start putting away food if you have not yet done so. But I find that canning food yourself is still less efficient and more costly then just buying canned items from the store, at this point at least. I do agree that learning how to can/getting all the materials needed to can foods is a good skill to know going forward however. I have a few things in my pantry that I have canned myself, but most things I bought from the store.

I think you should have at least 6 months of food stored up for all the people that you want to take care of...including pets, so don't forget pet food. Also, plan to have food to give to your neighbors, etc., if they need some.

Rice, flour, sugar, salt, tuna fish, canned ham, and canned beans will last you a long time. If you freeze the bags of rice in your freezer for a day or two before storing, it will last that much longer, as you will eliminate any insects. Dry goods can be stored in any plastic container that is waterproof...2 liter pop bottles are good for this.

Most people around you will never store food...it's just too far away from what is "normal" in this current society. Don't do what most other people are doing...you will not regret it.

Re: It is time to start storing food for your family. Canning is easy and inexpensive
I have canned food before and I can tell you that it is neither easy nor inexpensive. But it is worth it to do it.

The initial outlay of money is substantial with buying canning jars and lids, a pressure canner and all the trappings needed to do the job. And it is a hot miserable job in the summertime where I live.

Best thing is to freeze what you intend to can during summer and when it's cooler/colder weather, can it then.
