Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
No kittehs in my house at the moment, but dog owners read the food bags too. The main ingredient in a lot of them is corn. Dogs don't need corn, many are allergic and I believe it shortens their lives. When my doggy was eating regular dog food, he itched ALL the time, smelled terrible, and was constantly trying to scratch his muzzle. Now he eats what I cook form him (no corn at all, ever). He no longer smells, his coat is beautiful and no more itching.

Corm and soy & all the crap ingredients are just as bad for dogs! The only reason they don't get sick as fast is that they are usually somewhat larger than casts.

Feed stores have relatively inexpensive brands of dog food without harmful stuff. One brand is DUTCH'S; it is not the most nutritious product out there so you'd want to give them vitamin supplements as well but it will not kill them like GMO corn & the other junk that is contained in much of the pet food on the market.

Thanks a lot Monsanto you bastards!

Wow, I have to say thanks for this thread, my cat does too. I started feeding her food without grain/artificial ingredient and she's been holding it down for a few days. She's plumper and looking healthier.

one of the reasons I started buying topnotch food for them a few years ago. Will cost me more now, but less than when all three got kidney or intestine problems later. They're your loved ones, right? Treat them best you can, as you would other dear ones.

Cats do not digest Corn, wheat, soy, or any of these "fillers" the food companies put in the food to save costs. Think about it. Wild cats eat Mice, Rats, MEAT. not Corn... Now don't feel so bad, cus this was all news to me too.

mmmmm rats, mice and birds eat LOTS of corn, wheat, grains...cats eat them and digest whatever they ate..

Certain breeds will development this sympton more so than others. I've got a ragdoll and it happened with him as well, didn't cost 2k but probably $200. Switched his food and he's been great since.

Take care of your little buddy.

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
Firt, I feed my kitteh very well.

Years ago (decades) I had a cat that developed this problem. The veterinarian said this was common in cats that were "fixed" too soon and the urinary tract did not fully develop.

I am thinking that this old horse doctor was basing his opinion on years of experience. Since that time, I always wait as long as possible before "fixing" a pet and they have not had any such urinary tract issues.

Just saying that even though I fall for the hype and buy the expensive food, it could actually be as the old vet said.

You sad sacks love your animals more than your children. You feed them better and want them these beasts to be healthier than your own prodigy. You are Fucked beyond belief. Shame on you. Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
Crystals in the urine that clog the urethra is the problem. Not enough exercise or not drinking enough water can make the problem worse. Also a narrow urethra makes it more common in males. Massaging the penis can help break up any blockages if your cat is suddenly having trouble peeing.

Cats with this problem will start trying to pee at places outside the litter box every few minutes and only be able to go just a little at a time and may act like it's painful. Ignorant owners might mistake this for bad behavior and scold the cat, thus ignoring that the cat is heading towards a very serious (and expensive) medical crisis.

Commercial cat foods try to compensate by adjusting the PH to be more acidic. Too much of that can cause the opposite problem, which is calcium stones that do not dissolve and cause greater problems.

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
Great thread--thought I'd add--

CAT LITTER

If you buy the stuff with deodorizers and chemicals, clumping agents....you might wind up with lots of digestive problems.

How, you might ask?

the cats are always licking themselves--the litter gets stuck on their feet--they lick it off--their tongues have those barbs that won't let them spit things out--barbs force food down and out--hence fur balls.

[link to virtuavet.wordpress.com]

Also, the dust from such litters can coat our cats’ lungs, leading to respiratory problems. The Hennepin Center for Poison Control in Minnesota has reported instances of poisoning in humans from chronic ingestion of sodium bentonite, so just imagine what effect it can have on our kitties!

Quartz silica (sand), the other ingredient in most clumping litters, is a known carcinogen for both humans and household pets when inhaled.

I use many of the different "Pine" based kitty litters--the cats like it fine and it is better for them, me, my family and the environment--might look more expensive--but a little goes a long way--just over an inch in the box--it expands when they pee on it--

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
It works the same way it works for people. Feeding them grocery store food is like a person eating McDonald's daily.
I just wish the better food was not so damn expensive.

Also, the food we feed them is why their teeth get so bad. In the wild they are used to hunting their food, which means tearing the meat & bones apart. This keeps their teeth clean.

There are several sites that you can use that rate the quality of food you're feeding your pets. Science Diet is rated very poor, yet you'll see vets selling it. I think the company that makes Science Diet must give these vets some incentive to sell that garbage. Sort of like the drug reps get your Doctor's to promote their medication.

Maybe someone has this similar problem, I have 2 cats, my cat Jedi always knocks over the water bowls, he pushes the bowl with his head until it knocks over or all the water spills out, has anyone else had issues with a cat doing this and is because he may not favor the water? Doesn't see the water? drives me crazy coming home and water all over the floor everywhere lol

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
one week ago at this moment in time, my furry 4-leg friend and I found ourselves in the 24X7 Emergency Vet Clinic. Today after work exactly a week later, my poor cat has finally come home. He is on about 8 different pills, and will be sore for a month. I am on a 12 month payment plan for nearly 2 grand in Vet Bills. and ALL of this could have been avoided. My fellow cat owners, please read on:

There is a thing called FLUTD (Feline, Lower Urinary Tract Disorder) / Obstructive idiopathic cystitis
more info : [link to www.fabcats.org]

Essentially the gyst from what I have learned in the past week is very simple. Go get your bag of Cat Food. Got it? good. Read the ingredients. The first or second one is some kind of Corn Meal. Right? now throw it in the trash.

Cats do not digest Corn, wheat, soy, or any of these "fillers" the food companies put in the food to save costs. Think about it. Wild cats eat Mice, Rats, MEAT. not Corn... Now don't feel so bad, cus this was all news to me too.

You want to look for cat food that will say loud and proud on the bag " does not contain Wheat, Soy, Animal Bi-products or Corn ! " yes. it will be more expensive. Not as expensive as what I just went through. And not as ugly as it almost was...

my poor cat is begging me to tell you. Investigate this. research. dont use crap food. In fact dont even buy it from the Grocery store, or Walmart at all because they do not carry reputable brands. They carry crap. Go to Pet Smart or your local feed store.

The brand my Vet recommends is called Blue Buffalo. [link to bluebuffalo.com] its expensive.. But its now in my cats dish, and its something for you to consider...

Do your own research...

That's a common 'wives tale', there's no truth to that misconception. Really! Check it out yourself, there has been serious research done on the subject.

I had a cat who had that problem many years ago, he wasn't neutered till after he was fully mature.

A cat I have now was neutered as early as I could get any vet to do it, he's healthy as can be.

First cat was fed grocery store type cat food, this is fed much better quality.

If a vet tells you that early neutering causes the urethra to narrow enough to get plugged up with crystals, find another vet.
