They can sometimes feel some pain at first ..howling at night, Urinating in strange places, licking almost obsessively . Watch for either and call your vet to make sure there is no blockage. I hope you were given some pain meds for him :(

I used to cook up a nice chicken for my old kitty - it would last him a few days. Give him some canned cat food too for extra vitamins. He loved that damn roast chicken and lived to be 18. I still would recommend making your own cat food at least to some extent. just be careful of bones.

I hear vets going on about how kitties need taurine and they can only get it in canned cat food or they'll go blind. What the hell did kitties do before processed cat food? Must have been a lot of staggering pussies out there.

2 grand...on a cat? For that much you could've just bought 20 new cats...

lol

I come from the country and a condition such as this would have ended with a shotgun and a shallow grave, but I realized after moving to the city that this most definitely not how city people deal with their pet's health issues. But, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That's why this is a great thread.

Oh how cute! Is that kitty yours? Exotic Shorthair? I love that face...it's totally adorable!!

yes ! Thank you ! That is mooshi he is an exotic shorthair :) I have an exotic long hiar too :) They are babies

He is a cutie and sooo lovable

look up a few posts and you will see them both

Aww, the longhair is also a cutie pie! I love their names too!

I've been thinking about getting an Exotic Shorthair. I had Persians in the past, but it was a lot of brushing and with my arthritis and carpal tunnel, all that brushing would be too painful for me. An Exotic Shorthair seemed to fit the bill...that same cute Persian face and stocky build, but without the long, easily tangle fur. Then again, I like the size and looks of Ragdolls...they have long hair, but it doesn't tangle easy, so doesn't require a lot of brushing. I'm still undecided. I wish I could find an Exotic Shorthair/Ragdoll mix, lol, that would be cool.

well the short hair Mooshi Kin is very easy to take care of and super lovable and sweet. Similar to a ragdoll personality..only I think better :) I am a bit bias :) Yoshi Ami my sweet little girl is a bit more maintenance. I brush her every evening..but she loves it! They have super soft hair too and are great companions.

Taurine is mainly found in brains and intestines... that's where kitties used to get their taurine, live mice and such.

Yes, it's a necessity, no matter how they get it, they eventually need `some`.

Yeah.... my kittehh was born blind. Has no clue, never has.
Taurine doenst do him any good. But he likes his dry food.
Loves to crunch it into small pieces. He's not into fresh meats. Rarely begs for table scraps, he's that pickey.

only cooked bones pose a threat (can splinter in the throat, though my cat has fared well with the cooked bones too, got to one my kids dropped on the ground before I could get it from her). you will be amazed to watch your cat chew up a chicken bone within 3 minutes.

as for the taurine, dairy products, meat, poultry, eggs, and fish are excellent natural sources of taurine. feed these foods to your cat raw or cooked without bones and they will be super cats, seriously

Yeah, Blue Buffalo - the best! My cat loves it...unfortunately had to put his brother down about 6 months ago...very sad day! What were your cats symptoms?
 Quoting: jdb

sorry to hear that :-( they are like family, I have lost a couple pets in the past too. Feline Leukemia. Another thing: make them test for that, Don't let them give you that "indoor cat" shit. Test and Vaccinate. You live and learn with these creatures I guess.

At first he was just acting funny for a couple days about going pee. He would go allot, or at least I thought, and he also went in places hes not supposed to which is extremely rare. These are actually signs of the condition as it turns out, and a good factoid. That night he became extremely dis-comfortable, a total blockage had occurred, and I came home and found him basically shrieking in pain and fear so I flipped out and start calling Vets, they did a cathode which fixed the immediate problem but led to a week of urinalysis tests, toxicology exams, and several days the poor cat was on that tube being "flushed" or what ever. I was mortified.

Thank you for this thread and this post's information. Ironic timing because I have been searching online for a LONG time to see what else I can try for my cats (I have 9 boys and 3 girls-and been through UTI's with 4 of them recently).

I've spent over $300 just the last 2weeks, taking the one who currently has a bad UTI to the vet for visits, tests, medicine (wasted) and now shots every other day of medicine he will NOT take no matter HOW I try to give it to him, and he's still growling after he pees. I don't know WTF to do, but I will def stop feeding them the crap food apparently (yes, Walmart's cheap brand :( since that was all I could afford). Of course the vet bills have far superseded the cost if I had bought proper food in the fist place. Who knew? :( Now I just have to figure out how to help him STAT and what to do for the one who's still suffering, sigh.

Feed them raw Bones and raw chicken + rice and give distilled water to drink. They should have relief within 24 hours and it should get better very quickly

are you giving him distilled water to drink? I would also give him vitamin c to help his urethra heal and cleanse out any bacteria. There is a very high quality food based raw vitamin c that is relatively inexpensive. I dare not name it or tell you that you can get it on amazon for fear of being banned (been banned for recommending products before, ridiculous).

Simple, kneel down above said cat. Make sure kitty is between your legs, and since you are knelt down, or sitting on your heels, he can not back up and away from you. Place left hand over his head, and gently pull up / back, this will open his mouth naturally, it has no choice but to open. With right hand throw pill in, aiming for the back of his throat, close. While keeping left hand on head, keep in up / back position, and stroke kittys throat stimulating him to swallow, which will make pill go down. Release when you are certain the pill is gone. I was a Vet Tech for 4 yrs, this method is tried and true.

Dont even bother to hide it in food, it never works. They always go around it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4357384

And thank you too! I still have 3 pills left (and a few regurgitated "pill-pocket mush balls" with med in them, from a few weeks ago before I went to the vet/shot every other day so I'll give this a try again as well as the suggestion above. I had tried doing this with him bound tightly in a towel but he just gags and spits it out with a supernatural fierceness. It was seriously like fighting a rabid full grown tiger with his 10lb bad ass-but I didn't do the "pick up the head from the back" thing-what do I pull up, a bit of his top head hair? Not much there tho, he's a shorthair and the scruff of neck makes them look down, not up.

I had used "pill pockets"-no go, crushed pills in a variety of foods-no go, diluted with water and a little sugar via dropper down the throat-no go and he/they started foaming, spitting and jumping around freaking TF out, and I even told the vet I was considering putting some up his bum I was so at a frickin loss lol (but I didn't-that was just an extremely exasperated thought, lol). But I might as well see what I can do with your well described suggestion and those last few bit of medicine I have, and thank you for future reference as well.

It seems like pet UTI's are everywhere all of a sudden! I had several of my cats with it, my daughters dog got one and people I spoke to at the vet mentioning it :(

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
one week ago at this moment in time, my furry 4-leg friend and I found ourselves in the 24X7 Emergency Vet Clinic. Today after work exactly a week later, my poor cat has finally come home. He is on about 8 different pills, and will be sore for a month. I am on a 12 month payment plan for nearly 2 grand in Vet Bills. and ALL of this could have been avoided. My fellow cat owners, please read on:

There is a thing called FLUTD (Feline, Lower Urinary Tract Disorder) / Obstructive idiopathic cystitis
more info : [link to www.fabcats.org]

Essentially the gyst from what I have learned in the past week is very simple. Go get your bag of Cat Food. Got it? good. Read the ingredients. The first or second one is some kind of Corn Meal. Right? now throw it in the trash.

Cats do not digest Corn, wheat, soy, or any of these "fillers" the food companies put in the food to save costs. Think
about it. Wild cats eat Mice, Rats, MEAT. not Corn... Now don't feel so bad, cus this was all news to me too.

You want to look for cat food that will say loud and proud on the bag " does not contain Wheat, Soy, Animal Bi-products or Corn ! " yes. it will be more expensive. Not as expensive as what I just went through. And not as ugly as it almost was...

my poor cat is begging me to tell you. Investigate this. research. dont use crap food. In fact dont even buy it from the Grocery store, or Walmart at all because they do not carry reputable brands. They carry crap. Go to Pet Smart or your local feed store.

 Quoting: Taz

This is very true. Also please look into allergies to cats. ..it's not the cat, its the chemicals in their saliva that gets on their fur when they clean themselves, if they are eating crappy food. Also: some pricey 'good' foods are NOT good at all. Example: science diet. LEARN!!! My childhood Kitty lived well past 20, but he was outdoors woods cat that disappeared for weeks at a time. Lizards and mice, baby, nom nom!

It is a sad sad shame that our govt regulators want to keep you from having a cigarette lighter that has art on it yet there is absolutely no controll over pet food ingredients.

Let me stop the idiot that wants to spread the "old wives tale".."pet food is regulated and fit for human consumption"...WRONG!!!!
My dog almost died after eating Purina1..whoda thunk it! I have kept the bag for evidence, and plastic flea collar bits remain in the bag..so don't even think about suing me for telling on you. Without further ado..let me introduce those of you that can handle the truth...to "the truth about"

Re: Kitteh Owners : VERY important !
Hi All..

just read the first couple of posts and have jumped straight here, so if I missed anything..my bad.

For cat owners...well actually, for the servants of cats..!!

there is a diet here in Australia called the BARF diet.

Ok stop right there, when I first heard of it I also thought someone was having a lend of me too, so google it..its all on the level.

Anyway, this diet was put together by a vet and is based on the animals diet "in the wild" so to speak.

Its not cooked and is mainly made up of chicken and various other poultry items, but here's the bit I though at first a little strange, its mostly carcas bones.

Yep thats right mostly bones as they have most of the nutrients that your moggy needs.

You should also be feeding them a suppliment that replaces their need to eat other grazing animals gut, this is to replace some nutrients that cats cannot digest, hence they do eat gut, this is also why you see your pet chewing on grass, which they will eventually throw up.

I my house usually in all the wrong places.

Anyway, check it out, and BTW there is also a BARF diet for dogs too, Ive even seen that preperation in pet supply stores here in the land of Aus.

Hope this helps.

I have 7 feral cats I'm feeding in my neighborhood and they love meow mix from Walmart. Its cheap and tasty... only 11.98 for 17.6lb of food. Not high quality but these cats were skinny as fuck before I started to feed them. Two kittens went from days without food until I started to feed them. They love meow mix lol

I have 16 rescue kitties, and I have had some with the same problems. My oldest one Beau almost died from it.I rubbed some apple cider vinegar on his fur, so he would lick it off and get in his system to help him. He got better in just a few days.If your kitty is not himself , just rub a little acv on his fur.I really believe in ACV

I got a cat of two years.

My other cat lived fine until age 22 on Cat Chow brand, never one trip to to the vet. She just walked one day outside and collapsed of old age.

My cat now eats one canned food a day, usually Friskies seafood.

As has been stated, research and feed a raw diet. raw cat diets are more detailed than raw canine diets, but well worth it.
If you continue with manufactured cat food.... no corn, no soy, no wheat, no ash.

cats are obligatory carnivores, which means they must have a diet of almost all meat to have optimal health.
