Was a carer for elderly for 8 years before I had my son , some were cantankerous but most were sweet and kind people who were more than thankful for any help given , actually there are only a few who cannot administer their own personal care , the ones who generally need the help have been ill or are disabled.....I'd say it was the staff in the nursing home who were at fault in this post , no-one should ever be allowed to get into this state whilst under the care of so called "professionals"...

It is actually quite lucky that she ended up having maggots around the catheter area, because they would eat away at the infection that she must have had at the catheter site. She obviously was not being taken care of. She had a broken hip that the staff didn't even notice. How sad for her.

There's usually aids to do the washing up of residents. I am guessing there may have been an issue with dementia or something.

While nurses are typically trained in bed baths, in nursing homes they often have one nurse for 25 or more residents and the nurses are hired on the basis of other aspects of their training and have plenty of other responsibilities. CNAs are hired specifically for personal care and bed baths would fall under their job description.

Not that I am excusing this facility, or the nursing staff. But if you truly expect nursing to do all the bed baths, and do them well, you're going to have to hire a heck of a lot more nurses.

I do not promote the use of maggots as a medcal proceedure, however they do not and will not survive on healthy tissue.

They were used many years ago and this case demonstrates why, that they are helpful where dead and decaying tissue is involved as apparently must have been the case here.

It is sad that the medical attending staff didnt listen to the complatnts of their patient, but fortunately the critters did their job in the absence of more conventional medical practices and I am certain that there will now be some very serious examinations of attending staff and their execution for their professional duties.

Hopefully those involved will either lose their rights to practise, or at the very least, be stood down until they receive appropriate re-training and examination to the level that their qualifications permit.

As a by-line leaches are still used even today in certain medical situations.

And the last of the two medical solutions for the problem were, that the three nurses that applied the last solution all needed to change clothes before going home to bathe and burn their uniforms.

All the rest of the bedding in the ward required disposal and the ceilings walls, floors and windows required specialized cleaning services, get my drift?
