Has Anyone Else Had This Happen to Them? Is it NSA, FBI or DHS?
I received a text message on my mobile phone last night from a number I didn't know. Here is the message I got-

Hi (my first name, yes they knew it), Jaz wants you to join their Life360 private safety network. Join here to keep each other safe: [link to www.life360.com]

I replied back to number that texted me with...sorry, I don't know any "jaz". Then I received this automated reply-

This phone number is part of the life360 emergency notification system. To learn more please go to www.life360.com.

So, I go to life360 and find out that it is an app for android phones that allow people to set up networks and track each other in real time. It will allow others in the network to "ping me" and see exactly where I am anytime they want to, and I could do the same to them. Now, the puzzling thing to me is that I really don't know anyone who goes by the name Jaz. No one that I know has ever asked me or talked to me about being in any kind of network like this. Is this some kind of scam, or am I being tracked by one of the alphabet agencies?

Scam,yes. Tracked, probably.

They've been doing it to you for years.

Now they're offering you the option of doing it to yourself.

Each ping goes back to them if you're interesting enough.

Well, yeah, I know they can track me by GPS on my phone, so why go to the trouble of sending me crap like this? It couldn't have come from anyone who knows me, since everyone who knows me, knows how I am about privacy. Hence the weird part....they knew my name.

You know how your android aps ask for different amount of access to your phone? That is one way this ap could've gotten your number.

Do you have any ap from the same manufacturer the life360 ap is from?

There are some aps that ask for so much access that it may not be originating from your phone, but from someone you called.

I always reject installation of anything that wants too much access to my phone because I worry it will screw up my phone.

I hadn't thought about that, but I will check my apps and find out, thanks for the suggestion. I hate the sneakiness of these smartphones.

I may be able to help with this one. I had that free app on my Android. It's called "Family Locator" and is powered by Life360, and that's the name their texts and their emails come in as.

When you get the app, you can enter the phone numbers of your family and they will get a text invite just like the one you posted. When they accept the invite, then you can locate their phone on a map but not in real time unless you pay to upgrade the free app. If you use the free version, the data is about 15 minutes delayed or so.

Someone probably mistyped and entered your phone number for an invite. Since it's a free app, I am sure lots of people have it and the changes of a misdial entry is not remote.

I would just delete anything you get that is from people you don't want tracking you. I am afraid that since you replied to the text, it may have "accepted" the invitation.

I decided a few months ago that I don't trust such apps and I disabled the satellite location feature on my phone. So now I can't be tracked by others (but the government can do whatever they want).

If the government wanted to track you, they wouldn't send you invites through text, they'd would just track you. So I am pretty sure some other user just fat-fingered in your number for an invite to someone else.

Good point. I don't know about that. Perhaps one of your friends is using a fake first name cause the whole app is a little weird anyway? Still, I think it's nothing sinister.

Jaz may be someone you know by a different name. The ap may have offered to send invites to Jaz's whole contact list and thus, it got you. Maybe your number is under your real name on Jaz's list or the ap just figured it out from your phone number.

I really think this is just a person who has installed aps willy nilly without looking at how much phone access they require. I have noticed some aps ask for more phone access than they could ever need. It is usually a pretty cool ap that many people might want. I noticed it specifically on a game once... I found a very similar game from another company that asked for no special access.

Do not allow this app on your phone!! I have had it on my phone for a few months to keep track of my niece. It's not perfect so occassionally when I check the history of where it shows I have been, I noticed it puts me at locations all over the map. One address in particular pops up repeatedly. I figured it was a fluke, however this morning I decided to see who that address belonged to. It's my former boss. Needless to say I immediately deleted the app off my phone. Talk about creepy! And NO, I do not believe this is a coincidence.
DELETE THIS APP! Do not allow it on your phone!

The story may sound odd; however, it just happend to me yesterday 12/03/12 and I received the same text message as well only they spelled my name wrong and said Robert is the one who wants me to join which is infact someone I know. He's my husband. I deleted it because I know he would never do anything like that, that's not even his style.

They are fishing for people to download the app. reply with #stop and it will send you a message saying you have unsubscribed and will not receive any further messages from that number.I was getting 2 or 3 messages from different "people" and the #stop worked well. I had never even HEARD of life360. Hope this helps.

Jaz may have been someone's initials. Seems only polite that you would want to let the person know that you want to track them.
My daughter's friends showed her this. The message I got said I could text no back in order to decline. It is a real site but since her phone is the good one and I don't get internet. I can't say if it is any good. Verizon offers a similar feature that one has to pay for.

You may have a split personality, OP, and Jaz is the other part of you trying to make contact to bring you back to wholeness. Does "Jaz's Playgound' jog any memories of leather, whips, and guys in motorcycle caps and chaps? Just asking.

Embrace all that Jaz, OP. It's trying to bring you all home again. Good luck and be at the ready should the Jaz make contact again. Don't Jaz around with this. It's serious bizzness.

Wow. Am I a big idiot. I got all Jazzed-up. OP's freakin post is about 18 months old. By now, he's either working as a cocktail waitress in a San Jose leather bar or running a couple of informants for the CIA in Libya.

Man, I'm a knucklehead (and I really wanted to meet Jaz).
