Warning of high deadly snake numbers as woman dies from snakebites
Warning of high deadly snake numbers as woman dies from snakebites at Wheatvale near Warwick

[link to www.couriermail.com.au]
QUEENSLANDERS have been warned of high numbers of deadly eastern brown snakes this summer after a woman died from a snake bite in the state's southwest.
Scientists and snake handlers yesterday said the dangerous predators were breeding in high numbers and moving into urban areas following two good wet seasons.

Bitten by a snake? Here's a guide to what to do

Brisbane snake catcher Geoff Jacobs (main picture) said he was removing two to three dangerous snakes a day from Brisbane homes and buildings.

Narelle Pails, 43, had been working in her garden at Wheatvale near Warwick on Wednesday night when she was bitten several times by the snake.

Paramedics were called to the property at 4.50pm but Ms Pails, (pictured) a nurse at Warwick Hospital, was pronounced dead three hours later surrounded by her husband Paul, son Nicholas, 15, family and colleagues.

On average, two to three Australians die each year from snake bite, with eastern browns accounting for about half of the deaths.

It is not known what type of snake killed Ms Pails.

Yesterday the southern Queensland town of Warwick was in shock over Ms Pails' sudden death.

Ms Pails had picked up her husband Paul from work and son from school and they arrived home together before she went out to her garden.

She called out to her son from the garden and showed him the bite on her leg before going into a cardiac arrest.

Her aunt Margaret Shelley said Ms Pails was an exceptional woman and a dedicated mother of Nicholas and Emma, 18, who was out of town with her university studies.

"Everyone's just devastated," Ms Shelley said. "They are in shock. It's unbelievable.

"She was exceptional, loved by everyone she worked with - all the nurses and doctors.

"She was a local woman through and through, she was born here, got married here."

The snake is understood to have bitten into Ms Pails's blood vessel, depositing venom directly into the bloodstream, which would have killed her within minutes.

She was bitten several times through her trousers but the type of snake has not yet been released.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers from Stanthorpe were asked to transport a second vial of antivenene from Stanthorpe Hospital to Warwick Hospital.

But Queensland Health director-general Tony O'Connell said Warwick Hospital had 14 vials of antivenene on hand, more than enough to treat the woman.

"If snake venom gets into the bloodstream straight away, rather than just being deposited in the muscles, then it's a much more difficult challenge," said Dr O'Connell, a former intensive care specialist.

Scientists and snake handlers yesterday warned Brisbane residents to be on the lookout for snakes with more breeding and moving into urban areas.

Queensland Museum Curator of reptiles Patrick Couper said after two heavy wet seasons rats, mice and other wildlife had bred-up providing extensive food sources for predators such as snakes.

He said the result was snakes would also be breeding in high numbers.

Brisbane snake catcher Geoff Jacobs said people living in the suburbs who plant flowering and fruiting trees also boosted wildlife numbers, with insects, crickets and birds all providing food for snakes.

As much as I hated it, I had to kill two in my back yard a couple of weeks ago, also a red belly black, which was the most unfortunate one as they kill the browns, problem was , there was a nest of them just under the front steps and they are still toxic and can still kill, you just have a bit more time than with a brown snake, we also have alot of death adders....we walk carefully around our place.

sorry...rediculous.

Whats that going to do, and anyway who has one of those things handy?

There is NO replacement for GOOD first aid, and immediate evac to hospital.

Use whatever clothing you can to make a bandage.

Tornaquet's are out of the pictue as is cutting and sucking the wound, you are wasting valuable time, causing complications and increasing the risks.

Immobolize the affected limb, firm bandage over and above the site.

Stay calm, and restrict movement as much as possible.

If you need to move do so slowly to keep heart rate low.

This one was an extremely unfortunate incident, regrettably they happen.

Blacks, carry both neurotixins and haemotoxins in their poision, if you are really healthy you might live through a bite without treatment, but its nothing Id be prepared to put to the test!

Browns, Tigers, adders etc just about all carry predominately neurotoxins in their poision which is far deadlier.

Also, these snakes can be exceptionally aggressive, some will bite several times, and others have huge fangs that enable deep injection of poision.

Usually most people know what types of snake they are likely to encounter where they live and behave accordingly.

Walking around the yard in the dark, poorly clothed, usually bacause of the warmer weather, is a pretty good way to find a snake on the move looking for food.

Common sense dictates that a simple torch and due care will keep people and snakes happily apart.

They usually need a reason to become agressive, like being given a fright by unexpected appearances, getting close to nests, standing on them, cornering them, etc.

As said, simple common sense can usually avoid unpleasand introductions.

I have an eletric fence...some farmers swear by them to cure cronic fatigue syndrome and ross river fever....not sure how that would work or how it would help a snake bite, I have even heard of people suggesting magnets, but not sure how that would help either

Assies should not be so tight assed about exporting venomous snakes and other animals.

Why on earth would you want us to export deadly snakes? As to the other native wildlife, it's protected, we can't even keep them as pets ourselves. Good idea as it lessens the temptation to catch from the wild and sell in pet stores.

If you can apply a tournique to the limb, then you have enough time to get some anti-venom into the victim. Usually.

Re: Warning of high deadly snake numbers as woman dies from snakebites
I know of someone who died by a snake bite. He was only 16 and tried to catch a brown snake. The snake struck him several times on the hand he dropped it and ran. He collapsed when he got out of the bush, his friend who was with him ran off to get help from some men playing a game of cricket. They didn't believe him and ignored him so he went back to stand by his friend, who by this time his whole face and neck was swollen. The guys playing cricket eventually went over to find out what was going on, and they called the ambulance. Of course it was way too late. The boys face, neck and tongue were all swollen blocking off his airways.

Yes This year there are more rattlesnakes in the mohave desert. We had to kill one in our camp this year. A friend of mine had to face a large one in the yard. I have only seen one other rattler in 28 years and that was when we looked in a canyon known for them.

Snakes on the rise.

I hate snake doom.

I wouldn't hesitate to kill anything on my property that posed a serious risk...to humans or pets. It's regrettable, but not nearly as regrettable as the loss of a loved one....or one's own life.
