You know how in the movie people don't turn to dust if they were shielded by metal type housing. Then there were people who turned to zombies who were somewhat shielded.

I'm thinking that maybe everyone in Mayan era could have turned to zombies because the ozone layer wasn't all fucked up like it is today and that was the shield they needed to not be straight up dusted.
