cold doesn't have to mean snowy. it could mean a host of different things, especially if you consider the possibility of coming from another solarsystem.

this is the hypothesis i like to toy with most and have modified and adapted countless times. i constantly entertain other possibilities that i find from new knowledge, inspired by other people's ideas, idle thought and random 'a-ha!' moments. i have, over the last decade or so, variably thought about these things while in many different states of mind.
keep in mind that i say i like to 'toy' with this hypothesis. we don't ever really know history. all we can be absolutely sure of is 'now, according to me.'

so... for whatever reason, some long ass time ago there was a race of humanoid beings that came to earth and 'played god.'

i like to assume they wanted gold. maybe they needed to process it into their homeworld's cold atmosphere to help spread/conduct their 'dark' star's heat (or other energies) or even spread over their bodies to the same end?

when they got here they found, to their delightful surprise several different potential starting points to a sentient humanoid. so they said "let us make man in our image" [the bible is just one of many places i've drawn from, it just happens to be well-known.] and using the laws of genetics and evolution, set out to do so.

i think there were probably a few batches before they got what they wanted. maybe they made them too dumb at first, so played with the brain genetics a bit. maybe then they were too intelligent to control or not physically strong enough for the labour they wanted.

one way or another, there were obviously better candidates for dominate species then us, out of the supposed ancestors in our genealogical history. yet here we are: intelligent enough to understand complex things yet somehow limited to 'blind, polarized, logic-loop type thought' while maintaining more than adequate potential for physical development when combined with our mental abilities.

that sounds like an ideal worker-race to me.
