Bright star in the west during sunset
I was on my way home from work when I noticed a star that appeared to be in the constellation Ophiucus, the direction that YU55 is supposed to be coming from. It's about 15 degrees above the ecliptic, and it was VERY bright when the sun was setting- almost just as bright as Jupiter. Could this thing be coming in earlier? Or could this thing actually be MASSIVE? I checked google sky and the only thing in the area was Venus, but Venus shouldn't have been this high above the ecliptic.

Maybe I'm mistaking for another star but I have never noticed this before. Has anyone else seen this?

I live in southern Indiana. I would get my scope on it but I live in an apartment complex and I can't get a good vantage point from here

Re: Bright star in the west during sunset
I saw this last night, just after sunset and posted on here about it. Seems it must be Venus. Where I am (New Zealand) it was brighter and bigger than Jupiter. I could see both at the same time.

You live in southern Indiana - so do we. I have noticed it too. A bright star I've never seen before. And it stays bright right until dawn. Not quite sure what it is.

This is opposing Jupiter in the western sky during sunset hours. I am a Jupiter junkie and love checking her out on the scope :)

If this isn't Venus, where is this "star" in relation to Venus, which is quite obvious in the southwest after sunset.

Re: Bright star in the west during sunset
I was relying on Google Sky on my Droid phone to map the stars. Venus appeared to be maybe a degree or so above the ecliptic at this time. It seemed to be WSW, very near Venus-except about 15 degrees above it, almost directly inside the constellation Ophiuchus (well according to Google.....)

Ok, angry wife just left. I'm going to pack up the scope and see if I can't get a good view. I'll update from my phone in about 20-30 mins

It didn't appear to be shimmering like stars further away should be :-/

I've seen this, too! Definitely something new at the horizon that hasn't been there long and is very bright! Let us know what you find out, OP. I would be most interested!

Well what I saw this evening was a bright star like object but it was more in the east northeast, it was out just as the moon was coming up before any stars were out...what would that be

I saw it. Very bright, especially being in the remaining light from the setting sun. Didnt think there was anything as bright as jupiter is right now but that might have been.

15 degrees above the ecliptic? Rule out both Mercury and Venus then. But they are both right there.

Well it was below the ecliptic by the time I got to a good vantage point :( I'll be sure to check it out tomorrow at sunset and report back here.

Probably Venus. Very bright and often visible in the evening and at dawn. Known as the Evening Star and the Morning Star.

arge asteroid 2005 YU55 – the largest close-approaching asteroid on record – will sweep closest to Earth tomorrow (November 8, 2011) at 5:28 p.m. CST (23:28 UTC). About a quarter mile wide (400 meters) – round and dark – 2005 YU55 will be 198,000 miles (319,000 kilometers) from Earth’s surface. It will be closer than the orbit of the moon. What will it look like? Will you see it as it sweeps past?

It would be funny if the bright object went away after the asteroid passed. 8-)

Re: Bright star in the west during sunset
I saw it too last night. I'm from Hawaii, and it wasn't Jupiter, because this bright object was on the horizon when the moon was overhead...I saw Jupiter next to the moon, so whatever this was, wasn't Jupiter...was SUPER bright when I saw it last night.

However, in other news, apparently the space station flew over Hawaii last night and it was crazy bright and going pretty fast. You could only see it for about 5 minutes before it was no longer visible.
