It's been common knowledge for years that US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan routinely shoot animals (mostly dogs) under the guise of "animal/disease control" , but really it's encouraged by their commanders so that they will become desensitized to killing, and also it's considered "fun" by the troops.

So is it any surprise really that these same troops would find it amusing to beat animals to death ? The average grunt who goes outside the wire will never get the chance to kill a "haji", but at least they do get to enjoy killing something.

It's pretty obvious why these "combat" veterans are now being given first priority in hiring by law enforcement agencies -- they've tasted blood and enjoy killing. However, just remember that the most "combat" most of these "heroes" have ever seen involved roaming the countryside killing helpless animals for fun.
