Hello my friends!

As many of you know i've been dealing with a life changing work injury that occurred last November while I was restraining a combative patient at work. After a 7 month struggle with the insurance carrier (workers comp), I finally have been approved to have a 360 degree lumbar fusion, also known as an anterior/posterior fusion. So, on November 19th I will have the first of two surgeries and on December 17th, the second. In the end I will have pins, rods and cages inserted into my L4/L5 and likely L5/S1 vertebrae.

Over the course of the past year I have watched lots of video's on YouTube about the surgery, many of which have been video diaries which I found to be very helpful. Being a nurse I knew the nursing side of it but I didn't know anyone *personally* who had gone through a fusion so watching the videos and joining chat forums dedicated to spine health have been extremely invaluable to me. I have made many lasting friendships and i've gained the first hand knowledge from others that I was lacking. Because the videos I watched were so helpful, I decided to start my own video diary channel on YouTube.

I have my first two video's up and thought that I would share this very difficult time in my life with my friends here on GLP as well. So enjoy and I hope that you can find them helpful, especially if you are suffering from chronic pain or back problems.

Have a blessed day!

Thank you for your opinion, unfortunately conservative therapy hasn't helped, i'm walking with a cane and my quality of life is in the toilet. Sometimes surgery is an only option, especially since the injury is progressing. If things go wrong in the surgery at least I know I tried to get at least some quality of life back vs. being paralyzed as a result of doing nothing.

Re: 12/21/11 UPDATE: Video Diary, My Lumbar Fusion....
I had a back injury a while back (2001).. I waited about 8 months of agony for it to get better, it was so bad I couldn't even ride in a car, b/c every bump shot a bullet of pain onto my spinal nerve... My physical well being was almost gone, and I was in my low 20's... It sucked...

I had to have surgery to get my life back. I sought out the best neurosurgeon in Pittsburgh (great city for medical), got on the waiting list, and eventually he carried out a Microdisc surgery on me, essentially removing all pressure from the spinal cord.

HAD I NOT gotten surgery, I would not have been able to finish college, get a job, buy a house, get married, and have a kid.

Don't let people tell you to not have surgery. Every case is different, but, no one knows the situation better than you, and you just "know", when it is the only option.... which it should be the last option..

I am happy to report that I am fine now, Dude did an incredible job, even avoided messing up my tattoo... I still have some pain, but it is always manageable. It's worst on those cold rainy days, much like arthritis, but, still not enough to limit me in any way...

GOOD LUCK AND THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!!!

wanted to add, that the first surgeon I found locally, wanted to do a fusion on me, and that sounded pretty dramatic. I eventually found an alternative to that, the surgery technique was still in its infancy at that time, i'm sure they've learned even more since then. It was the same type that the pro sports players, etc. get..

Have you reviewed all the available surgery methods before deciding on a fusion. Sometimes, that is the only answer if there is not enough structural integrity and room to keep from it happening again.

again, each case is different.

Thank you SO much for sharing your story with me! It is always inspiring and lends hope to hear of people who have had good/great outcomes after back surgery!

I am SO very happy to hear that you have done so well and that you did not have to go the fusion route. Unfortunately for me, two areas on my vertebrae broke so there isn't a whole lot holding it in place, thus it slipped forward and is pressing on my cord and nerves. Because of this I am not a candidate for less invasive surgery or disc replacement as a stand alone. The instability is just too great.

Surgery has come a long way over the years and they have so many new micro procedures, it really is amazing! The success rates have increased as well. My surgeon has said he expects me to have a 70% reduction in pain post fusion. While it isn't perfect, i'll take it! If it takes my pain level down to a 3, I can live with that compared to an average 6-9 daily rating! I think realistically it's impossible to go into any back surgery thinking you will come out with a new pain free back. There will always be pain, it's just like you said, more manageable! Like you, I am at a point where I just want some quality of life back. I miss the normalcy my life once had. Simple things like playing tag with my kids or laying in the floor having tickle time. Hopefully this will give me back a little of that!

Thank you again for sharing your story with me and your successes that followed! I am so happy for you and inspired by you! Thanks also for the prayers and good vibes :) They are appreciated more than words.

Yeah, I have exhausted all options at this point. Because the issue with my fracture is structural integrity, a fusion is the only option. Less invasive techniques aren't recommended because my spine is just too unstable to tolerate them. It's a bummer but I have to believe as a Christian that God has a wonderful plan in all of this and that something wonderful will come of it all. The hardest part has been facing the fact that my career as a bedside nurse may be over. That has been really tough! No matter what the outcome though, it will all be okay and i've kind of come to terms with it at this point. After surgery it may be a different thing but at this point it is what it is. LOL.

I'll probably post video's every couple of days or sooner if I have anything of interest to report :) I will miss everyone here tremendously in my immediate post op period, i've built so many wonderful friendships. The days following surgery I suspect I won't be on much which will stink but i'll update as much as possible. If not on my own I'll have friends post updates for me.

My Mom had a similer surgery a month ago. I hope you are at Texas Spine in Plano! Great people...great work.

Anyhow, the surgery was extremely invasive and the recovery long & slow, so far, but the results at this point seem well worth it for her situation.

Best wishes to you & I hope all goes well!!

Be aware, if you are on nacotic pain meds, getting off those will be a requirement at some point. Not an easy task because your body will want the meds and trigger a false pain to get the meds. It will take some working through, so get your mind and spirit in the right positive place to get off the pain meds.

My dear friend,

How nice to hear your soothing voice! Lol, You can count on me being here for you, but more importantly keeping you in my prayers, as always since day 1. :)

Much love to you forever. Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;

Thank you my friend! I am not in Tx, I am CA. I will be having the surgery though at a spine center :)

I am so glad that your moms surgery went well and she is doing better! It is a LONG recovery for sure! Thank you so much for sharing your moms experience with me! I am always happy to hear of success stories! People are usually quick to talk about what goes wrong so successes are sweet music to my ears :)

Thank you for the advise on the narcotics. I have worked really, really hard to keep my use of them at bare minimum. For the first 5 months of my treatment my then treating surgeon wouldn't give me anything that worked well enough to even take the edge off. I know though when I come home I will be on some heavy hitter meds for pain and am fairly confident I will be able to keep those to a minimum too. Not cocky confident, just from past experience in 07 I had major emergency abdominal surgery that left me with a 8 inch incision. 3 days after getting out of ICU I had to learn how to walk again with physical therapy because my core was cut all the way through, muscles and all due to the emergent nature. Anyway, long story short, on the 3rd day when they got me up I refused all pain meds. I was in the hospital an additional 5 days and didn't take anything nor when I came home! It was quite an undertaking though because I hurt A LOT! I suspect it will be somewhat harder though this time because I will be having two major surgeries only a few weeks apart so the trauma will be much greater than what I experienced in 07. I'm praying though that God will see me through the whole process (surgery/recovery) with no problems!

You are absolutely right and I thank you for the reminder about being in the right mindset. It is SO very important! Staying positive and looking forward will be biggies! :)

Thank you again my friend for your kind words and warm wishes! I hope your mom continues to do well and feels better with each passing day! You both will be in my thoughts and prayers!

Blessings <3

Hello my beautiful friend!

Thank you for bumping my thread and for all your love, prayers and support! You are such a blessing and I cannot thank you enough for not only all you do for me, but for all those you touch! You are such an Angel!

I so needed to be reminded of 2Tim 1:7 today! The Holy Spirit was working through you today! I think I will write that verse down on a note card and take it with me to the hospital! I doubt i'll be of sound enough mind to remember it so the notecard will come in handy!

Just like a nurse, always thinking of others! Thank you for sharing your story.

The subject of nurse abuse and harm at the hands of patients is little examined.

hf Thank you for taking the time to post and watch the videos :) I LOL'd out loud at your nurse joke, so totally true :) I guess it's obvious I didn't get into the profession to make a quick buck, I got into it because I am passionate about helping people!

You are right, the subject of nurse abuse is something that isn't discussed much and something that happens much more often than people think!

Blessings to you my friend and thanks again <3

Thank you so much my friend! I SO appreciate your prayers and warm wishes!

I'm sorry to hear you have suffered from this your whole adult life. I'll keep you in my prayers too! IDK how you've been able to do it! How have you avoided surgery or have you had surgery? Football is very rough on the body! I don't think people realize how much stress it puts on the spine! The sad part of back injuries is that you never realize how much they impact your life until you are dealing with one face on. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Hugs, love and prayers to you my friend and thank you again, your kindness means so much to me <3

Can you say pain?

I had the same surgeries, but twice because of a lame first surgical team.

What state workers comp? Texas? Took 2 years for the first surgery because of this lovely system of negligent care for the injured.

I could go on for a few hours about what I truely think of the system but wont.

I wish you luck in your surgeries and pray you heal well and no pain.

Yes my friend, lots of pain! *sigh*.

I am in CA. 2 years of waiting, oh my. My one year has been traumatic enough, I can't imagine waiting 2 years! God bless you my friend! I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy and i'm so sorry you had to go through the same surgeries! WC is a horrible, broken system! I have heard nightmare stories of TX cases :(

My case was going fine until they requested the fusion. All the facts were in front of them however the IC never seemed to get the information correct so it has been delay, delay, delay, deny, deny, deny. Then it got complicated even more when I had to seek counsel. The sad thing is that the system in place doesn't care about the injured worker or getting them quality treatment so they can return to gainful employment. Each state seems to be as worse or worse than the others. It's so very sad :( I really, never imagined it would be this difficult or messed up.

How are you feeling now? How long was your recovery if you don't mind my asking? I will keep you covered in my prayers my friend! I pray that your back is healed and that you no longer have residual problems!

Thank you so much for your post, prayers and warm wishes! Prayer is so powerful and i'm so thankful to be a member here at GLP and surrounded by so many amazing friends who have taken and will take the time to pray for me!

God bless you my friend and thank you again from the bottom of my heart!

No surgery, I agonized with the same diagnosis. Every neurologist I was evaluated by wanted to fuse my back. My primary care physician would always say no, just wait. My last bout of three months of intense pain I went to a spinal decompression unit from my chiropractor. It was slow going but in the long run it really helped the pain.

I am much better now, I can still exercise and lift weights, no squats.
Every morning though starts out bad.

Pain can do terrible things to the spirit and mind.

I am glad to see you on your journey to being pain free! I had a friend go through the fusion procedure here in Texas a few weeks back and she is back at work and doing great after her surgery.

Re: 12/21/11 UPDATE: Video Diary, My Lumbar Fusion....
Surgery although not desirable is sometimes the only option....most surgery (after recovery phase) works well for several months or a few years. However after fusion the cushion of the disc is gone as well as the natural curve of the lower lumbar spine. So different pressure points emerge and increased stress of the lumbar spine and associated joints occurs which can result in re-herniation of different lumbar levels, back pain, sacroiliac, hip pain...........to minimize this potential problem one should lose weight and strengthen core to pick up the slack and stability of the natural disc. Good luck
