Updated note

Thread title originally said:
"Don't Do Disney" NASA Readies Nuclear Launch for Plutonium fueled 'Curiosity'

I changed it for todays launch:

Well, looks like some environmentalists and anti-nuke protestors are concerned about this upcoming launch of NASA's latest rover--Curiosity. Just something to consider if you are concerned about this type of thing. Personally, I'm not, I'd still go to Disney:

NASA intends in coming weeks to launch a rover to be deployed on Mars fueled with 10.6 pounds of plutonium.

Opponents of the launch in Florida, concerned about an accident releasing deadly plutonium, such as the explosion of the rocket that’s to loft the rover, have created a Facebook page warning people not to visit Disney theme parks in Orlando during the November 25-to-December 15 launch window. “Don’t Do Disney brought to you by NASA,” the Facebook page is titled.

a launch accident discharging plutonium has a 1-in-420 chance of happening and could “release material into the regional area defined…to be within…62 miles of the launch pad,” That’s an area including Orlando.

A millionth of a gram of plutonium can be a fatal dose

particles “would continuously irradiate lung tissue.”

NASA & the White House are about to take a chance—a very dangerous chance—with your lives Miamians.

If there’s an accident resulting in plutonium fallout which occurs above that and before the rocket breaks through Earth’s gravitational field, people could be affected anywhere between 28-degrees north and 28-degrees south latitude, says the EIS. That’s a band around the mid-section of the Earth which includes much of South America, Africa and Australia.’

I'd love to be there to watch the launch--the following photos in the link are amazing:

NASA Prepares to Launch Curiosity

If all goes well, tomorrow morning at approximately 10:02 a.m. Eastern time (GMT-5), NASA will launch its newest rover named Curiosity from Florida's Cape Canaveral, headed on a nine-month trip to the planet Mars. The $2.3 billion mission will send a capsule into the Martian sky in August of 2012.

Good Afternoon GodisWaiting4U,

Yes, let's hope it has a good trip. It will be about 8 months of travel before it touches the surface of Mars.

We did enjoy our Thanksgiving--lots of laughter, food and fun and lots of leftovers!

Have a little headache today, probably from eating the chocolate cream pie--but it was good!

Did you enjoy your Thanksgiving, too?

No doubt NASA is modifying the trajectory so this thing is over the ocean while in ascent.

Good luck NASA.
Should be a great project if it gets to MARS intact.

Yeah, protesters made a fuss back then, too:

Will Mars rover Curiosity be the last of its nuclear kind?

When the Mars rover Curiosity takes off tomorrow, it'll be packing a plutonium battery to power its myriad scientific instruments, but it could be one of the last to do so if NASA's next budget doesn't get approved.

The space agency and the US Department of Energy are swiftly running out of plutonium-238, a radioactive isotope whose heat is converted to electricity to power space missions that can't run off solar panels for one reason or another.

There have been accidents in the use of nuclear power in space. Of the 26 US space missions listed in the EIS which have used plutonium, three underwent accidents, the EIS admits.

The worst occurred in 1964 and involved, it notes, the Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP)-9A plutonium system aboard a satellite that failed to achieve orbit and dropped to earth, disintegrating as it fell.

The 2.1 pounds of plutonium fuel dispersed widely over Earth. The late Dr. John Gofman, professor of medical physics at the University of California at Berkeley, long linked this accident to an increase in global lung cancer.

Im glad you posted that - ive been googling the wrong words i guess - do you know if those 3 crafts had any one chemical substance in common that other (successful) launches did not have?

I watched.... ah bugger i forgot the exact link but something to do with how the ones that failed/exploded contained all that nuclear(plutonium?) and past ones (successful).

Like i said i must be using the wrong tag words, or its just not knowledge available for the public(censored)

More alarming, three of NASA's accidents involved radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) containing plutonium-238, including the following:

In 1964, a SNAP-9A satellite carrying two pounds of plutonium was eviscerated in the atmosphere.

In 1968, a rocket failed during launch from Vandenberg AFB in California carrying a Nimbus B1 weather satellite and four pounds of plutonium, which crashed into the Pacific Ocean. The plutonium was reportedly recovered without leakage.

In 1970, the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission returned to earth with its lunar module, containing a SNAP-27 RTG and eight pounds of plutonium. This module may still be sitting at the bottom of the ocean intact.

Good Morning Once4All,

Yes, I was thinking of that yesterday--God's creation versus man's creation.

We have the chance today to watch something that man has created go into the vast universe of God's creation and land on Mars--a wondrous planet that God created.

I'm amazed at what man can make, but I stand in awe of God's Creation!

Taken from Genesis-Chapter 1:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

God's Peace be with you...

"This man really is the Savior of the world!" John 4:42

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him;
and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.

Creation is very beautiful, including how we are so

wonderfully made. And everything has such a delicate

balance to it. I find it interesting how sin has really

upset the balance and is having such dire consequences to

this planet. I look forward to the full restoration!

May the Lord Jesus keep you in His peace.

Curiosity, hopefully, will touchdown inside Gale Crater

“Gale Crater is about as big as the Los Angeles basin,” said MSL project scientist John Grotzinger of JPL and Caltech, at the briefing. The mountain in the middle is as high as Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 US states.”
