Oh pay 'em alright. Make them dig ditches, plant trees, scrub toilets, etc for 40 hours a week the longer they are on the dole, the worse the job, if there are jobs to be had. On Saturdays or Sundays there would be mandatory job fairs for everyone. Tax credits to train the untrained.

You forgot to add something in your little list. When everyone starts getting real callouses on their hands it'll start straightening up.

Who are you talking too? I work and have never received government assistance. The only food I can afford is bologna and beans.

When our government endorses trade policies that allow corporations to move hundreds of thousands of jobs offshore, then allow the same corporations to move their mailing address offshore to avoid paying corporate taxes, the government becomes fascist and IS the problem.

When Greenspan retied from the Fed, then admitted that he purposely manipulated interest rates to slow down small business growth and purposely keep the unemployment rate above 4 percent, the the government IS the problem.

Today, there is only one job for every seven unemployed people. They have diminished our ability to be self-sufficient and have diminished our ability to earn a living.

There are only so many dog-walkers, lawn mowing and e-bay selling jobs to go around. If you think that everyone can suddenly start their own business, be absorbed into the economy and make a living wage, you are living in a fantasy world.

When McCain said (during his debate with Obama) that Americans don't want to pick strawberries, he meant that Americans won't do it for near-slave wages. Then he said something absolutely amazing. He said something like if he had a field, he wouldn't be able to find Americans to pick strawberries for $35 an hour!

What happened that night and the next day? His phone rang off the hook with Americans wanting to pick strawberries for $35 per hour!

I've seen the tin and cardboard huts that migrant workers in this country live in (near Sunnyside, Washington and other places). Not even the wetbacks want to live like that.

The rabbit hole goes deep and wide. It is a systemic problem. It could have been substantially cured, by allowing the system to collapse. When Paulson started complaining there was systemic risk, risk to the financial system, the right response was "good, it's about time!"

I picked strawberries and pruned grapevines for $1.50 an hour when I was 13. I would do it today for anything more than minimum.
