Yes, that is what they thought but the size of skull and volume inside pretty much killed that theory. Plus supposedly there is no suture in the parietal plate that homo sapien's skull would have. Hmm??? Let's just say that the ordinary people were likely mimicking those people with real elongated skull. Just have to wait for genetic test to see if they are homo sapien or not.
