What did she do? All I've heard about UC Davis is some students got pepper sprayed by cops.
 Quoting: BOSS OF ALL BOSSES

She OK'd the police to remove the protesters despite the unobtrusive, nonviolent nature of the protest.

Now, let me quickly describe the layout of the quad. The quad is constructed such that it is surrounded by pedestrian paths with a pedestrian path running through the middle. It's a small quad- you an walk across it in only about 1-3 minutes depending on your pace.

For the protest itself, no roads were blocked as the protesters camped in the middle of the quad. The encampment was small enough such that it did not cause any inconvenience to those crossing the quad through the middle- walking around the camp was trivial. The tiny camp they had set up was clean, so they weren't a public hazard either. They were making noise, but not enough to reach any of the lecture halls. Their only offense: camping there overnight. They were not informed the following day that their encampment was illegal by UC Davis rules.

You asked why people are angry at the chancellor. To elaborate on what I said earlier, people are outraged at how the chancellor ordered the removal of these peaceful, unobtrusive protesters on what is essentially a technicality, and how the removal resulted in our peers being injured. It's insulting. It shows what the chancellor thinks of us, the students.

Lastly, it is her duty to appropriately respond to the incident as well as use her power to protect the students' rights. She has failed at both of these duties.
 Quoting: UCD Student 5716437

Ahhh I see. She should have been made to walk naked while being pepper sprayed & booed as befitted Queen Antoinette.

It's called the free market. If you think tuition is too high you simply go to a different university You don't make an ass out of yourself

Yet you are too lazy to read this story and see it is about students protesting tuition.
 Quoting: Ilikecandy

Thank you! I was hoping somebody else understood what this is about. what was it 9% this year - about the same last year and the before and the year before - meanwhile less and less classes offered so people can't get into the classes they need for their degrees. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to try and get a degree these days and I thought it was hard 20 years ago - these kids are dealing with a lot different environment and unfortunately in my opinion probably most won't be able to get jobs that utilize their education unless something in our country changes.

The video haunts me - it was absolutely horrible to watch and at the end of the video when Mr Riot Cop was shaking his cans of pepper spray again I nearly cried for those kids - I was overcome by anger at how these police in riot gear acted towards a row of kids sitting down - UNBELIEVABLE! But I did find it interesting how the riot police had to back off the campus in a pack because they were afraid - I think in their heart of hearts they knew what they did was unacceptable and WRONG. Why do they think they had the right to physically attack these kids? What is going on in our country???? If they were going to arrest them, then arrest them - why the need for pepper spray - which I mistakenly believed was supposed to be used for defense only - my mistake.....

 Quoting: AlcoholicRunner

They are not typical hippies. The are engaged in gaining a University degree or Masters, for which they, or their parents have paid handsomely. Poorer people who, if they tried, used to be able to get special funding for their degree, Now hardly anyone (except those who want a lifetime mortgage) will now not have a chance in hell of getting a degree anywhere in the world. Fees and student loans have shot through the roof.

So you want Doctors? So you want highly skilled designers and engineers etc etc. Those people who will make your country great? Forget it - education is now in decline.

You should support the young as they bear the future of this world upon their shoulders.

Looks the young English teacher is getting plenty of agreement.
The Davis Faculty Association Board is calling for her to leave.

The DFA Board calls for the immediate resignation of Chancellor Katehi. The Chancellor’s authorization of the use of police force to suppress the protests by students and community members speaking out on behalf of our university and public higher education generally represents a gross failure of leadership.

Given the recent use of excessive force by police against “occupy” protestors at UC Berkeley and elsewhere, the Chancellor must have anticipated that, by authorizing police action, she was effectively authorizing their use of excessive force against peaceful UCD student protestors

Since when is a mild protest offensive? They were not rioting, they were not being unlawful, they were not putting the education of other students in jeopardy; they were simply making a statement about the rising cost of tuition. The reaction to the protest was militant, malicious and out of line.
I'm amazed at the yellow-bellied, head-in-the-sand attitude around here!
GENERAL ATTITUDE BEING DISPLAYED:
"Stop protesting, I like getting screwed by my bank!" "Stop protesting, I love how corporations are sending our jobs overseas to keep from paying me a fair amount for the work I do!" "Stop protesting, I don't want to have to fight for my rights!" "Stop protesting, I like my corrupt and idiotic politicians selling American land to Chinese banks to pay for a war that is killing the children of everyone I know!" "Stop protesting, I like that my government is funding the wars of other nations!"

Really, GLP?

Condoning torchure is nothing to be proud about. Torchure does not carry the American belief system as of yet. What they did was not just spraying the children, they torchured them. Pepper Spray and Tazers should be outlawed period. Their intention may have had merit but the goon thugs that have abused their intended use has destroyed the intention and should be outlawed as torchure devices.

Exactly right. If they don't like the tuition, go somewhere else. No one held a gun to their heads saying they must stay and pay. Also, they had no right to camp out in a public place. Adderley vs. Florida. Squatting on public property as a form of speech is not an absolute, unqualified right.

What these socialist idiots really want, as you point out, is for taxpayers to cough up yet more bennies for socialists like them.

Once you "call the authorities" to solve a problem and they arrive, the ball is sort of in THEIR court as to how they handle a situation or what results from their being on scene. In other words, once they arrived she had no more authority in their estimation than any of the other "protesters".

Here in Portland Oregon (and I'm sure that we are not alone here) we have seen this happen occasionally when someone calls the police because a family member is misbehaving in such a way that the family member (wife, parent) cannot control or "talk them down" (drugs, alcohol, etc.) Sometimes those people are badly hurt or even killed by the police when they refuse to obey orders to stop whatever it is that they are doing.

Very sad, but can one expect any different result when children have not been raised to respect/obey a lawful Police (or parental) order? When they have been told all their lives that they are so "special" that they need not suffer any consequences from their chosen transgressions? When they have never been made to wait for fullfillment of their every desire but instantly presented with whatever they want without regard for the financial or emotional cost to those around them?

Let me remind you that Chancellors DO NOT operate in a solitary universe! There are LAYERS of people to whom THEY are responsible and must answer to for their actions and decisions. Under the circumstances I'd say that she made the most logical and appropriate decision, and any responsibility for injuries etc. must rest with the "protesters" who no doubt made the decision to escalate the situation. Hopefully they will have learned their lesson, albeit the hard way.

Better yet, maybe they'll just decide to go home and end all of this nonsense.

I can't believe the people here trying to blame the violence from the police on the protesters. The privileged kids you talk about would not be the students out protesting tuition hikes; they would be home playing games or doing something else for themselves. Those who act for others are strong and courageous.

Supposedly, the Chancellor gets paid big bucks because she has responsibilities. She made a bad decision and must be held accountable. I hope she is never able to get a position of authority again. The public will REMEMBER her.

Maybe the best response would be for her to be tied down an pepper sprayed. She may not be so quick to call the police in next time. No skin off her face though so why does she care what happens to other human beings.

So what's next, students sitting there peacefully being shot? Is that OK with those saying these are just whiner hippies? Would you prefer that people just shut up and accept that which is unacceptable to them. Should they just shut their mouths and follow the leader and fall in like good sheep? If this were happening somewhere else you would be up in arms and calling for us to go and bomb them into nothingness and kill their leader for violating the peoples freedoms.

I have no idea how the animals that did this can live with themselves. It is wrong period, no matter how you look at it. We are losing our freedoms daily and allowing these monsters to do anything they feel like doing. They are free from the fear of imprisonment or even losing their publicly funded jobs.
