For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7
Quoting: Salt You are taking the scripture out of context, and seeking to use scripture against scripture. In this passage Paul is exhorting Timothy to stir up his courage to preach truth and not be ashamed of the testimony of Jesus Christ... This means Paul is telling him that God has not given him a spirit which should fear unbelieving MEN more than God. To claim this is Paul telling Timothy to not fear God is... very ignorant, considering Paul explicitly exhorts the churches to fear (phobos/phobeo - be afraid, exceedingly fear) God throughout his letters, as did Christ.
Romans 11:20 "Be not highminded, but *phobos*: For if God spared not the natural branches, lest he also spare not thee."
Romans 3:18 "The way of peace have they not known: There is no *phobos* of God before their eyes."
Jesus Christ says:
Luke 12:5
"But I will forewarn you whom ye shall *phobos*: *phobos* him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him."
The Hebrew word you mention is also used in various Masoretic passages to indicate the equivalent of Phobos, not mere 'respect' or 'reverence'. You have to factor all instances of the word to understand its meaning and depth.
Any time an 'angel from the lord' visited a person in scripture, they were apparently filled with stark terror. They were subsequently told to 'fear not' and sometimes to 'stand up', most likely so they could at least function and hear what the angel had to say... Do you think *after* this encounter they were less fearful of God? No. No. No.
When the prophets told the people to "Fear not", this was in regard to the surrounding nations, and for the fact that God was their defender, not so they wouldn't be afraid of God.
If the power of God and his sovereign will does not fill you with awe and terror, you apparently do not have a grip on who God is presented scripture.
