so in the wilderness of my childhood
which admittedly runs more to songbirds
than to carnivorous raptors or wolves
there was the occasional day i could
find this dreamlike space of a wandering
that led me to a mysterious pond
that never appeared in the same place twice
(or so it seemed to me)

i would start out on the way to the lake
then turn left before the road divided
and left again into the piney wood
if i attended to my surroundings
and followed the path as i remembered
i was not lost and the pond was not found
it was in reverie that it presented
astonishing immediate and real

it was small but deep and the blue of ink
in the shadows cast by a ring of trees
and i would spend what felt like hours and days
gazing into its fathomless stillness
(or so it seemed to me)

but i was never once late getting home

Getting lost is the easiest way to get home
Sad to say but true...
Letting go of needs and desires
Selfish dangerous high wires ...
The secret lake is yours, yet it's mine too..
I found it while I was looking for me...
Not paying attention, and there I was ....
Along the darkened trail....
Chased by a phantom..
One I did not recognize, yet understood intimately....
Like narcicissus I gazed along the inky shoreline..
Lost in self wealth and tears of joy ...
