The momentum coming to a sudden stop produces a lot of heat from compression. But not the spark kind of heat, rather a general heat that aids in vaporizing the fuel rapidly. Plus the air drag behind the plane churns the vapor quickly as it hits the hillside.

I just read a RSOE bulletin that said this crash is suspected to be tower error, as if they were told to fly too low. The pilot was very experienced, and there is a chunk missing from the tower-pilot communications in the log from that night with regard to that plane. It is thought that the tower possibly erred in not telling them to fly at the proper altitude and caused the accident, then withheld the data to cover it up!

I am still trying to find the bulletin as I hit the "delete" button too quickly on my e-mail, then could not find it. I get so many of them.

Yeah it was too low probably the autopilot was engaged and the altitude was not correctly set and boom smashed in the hill

We call that "controlled flight into terrain" in the business.

Sad to see this. Those poor people.

Garmin aero 550 would have saved those kids' lives. Too bad the adults were such imbeciles.
