Reminds me of something that happened a few years ago. My wife and I had to go to downtown Dallas to pick up our son from the Greyhound bus station at 2 am on a Saturday. We pulled in, parked and I went to feed the parking meter. A homeless man walked up, pointed at the small sign that said I didn't have to pay if it was after a certain time. I thanked him and asked if he needed anything. He said a cigarette, so I gave him one.
After this, a young, 20ish black gentleman nicely dressed, but wearing a blood red shirt, black pants, and blood red shoes with a matching arm band came and leaned against the wall about 10 feet from us. We nodded at each other and I positioned myself between him and my wife, and we continued our conversation.
In the next few minutes, several homeless people approached me, asking for cigs. I gave each one of them one cigarette. I was smoking the last one that I had when a very large black man wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head asked if he could have one. I told him I was fresh out, but he could finish the one I was smoking if he really wanted. He took a step towards me and said "I want a new one, not your used shit".
Before I could react to it, the 20ish blood red back dude wedged himself between me an the other guy and said "The nice person offered you his last smoke. Either take it and leave, or you will have real problems". The big guy left, the one that stood up to him walked into the bus station and came out with what looked like a two year old little girl. She kept saying "Daddy, I'm so happy to see you".
He walked by us, stopped and whispered to me "yeah, we have family too, I can understand. God Bless."
