My neighbour had the bloke come round on friday to measure up for the tanks. He reckons it's going to cost over a grand for the three tanks (he's going for a full fat, skimmed and is taking up a free cottage cheese tank option). Plus he's liable for maintainence AND making good after installation.

Why not go to the store and buy it? LOL

I'm guessing they haven't delivered milk in the US since the 60's or even before that. It's been a really long time.
 Quoting: SPUD

Milk was still being delivered up until the late 60's where we live in Washington state.

It's not just the walking (nearly 3.5km round trip in my case), it's the fact my uncle (mother's side) happens to be a milkman (fourth generation) and it's very hard to see how he can make ends meet with these new proposals. Things are getting very tough here, I can really feel the anger mounting over this one. This time they've chosen the wrong thing to fuck with. An englishman will NOT tolerate UHT longlife in his tea!

The milkman is a dying breed! All the supermarkets are selling milk at lower prices! Blame the following:

Asda
Tesco
Sainsbury's
Morrison's
Co-Operative
Aldi
Lidl
Farmfoods
Iceland
Netto (although i haven't seen one for years)

As long as there are supermarkets around, selling whole milk, the milkman will be going on the dole.

Re: BREAKING!!! Milk deliveries in UK now only once a month!!!!!
we got a similar letter op.

however there is some concern up here (scotland) that the cold weather will make this difficult to implement.

The SMPB (Scottish Milk Provision Bureau) have suggested that we will be able to purchase heated blankets for the tanks, but these will only be for the 500 type tanks. Im not even sure what temperature milk freezes at?

Not really happy about this, as not only has the price changed, but we now need to PAY to keep it "slightly" heated as well...

Its ridiculous, but what can you do?

Re: BREAKING!!! Milk deliveries in UK now only once a month!!!!!
It were great.. had our bottles of milk delivered.. at least one bottle top opened up by a small bird drinking the cream, would just drink it straight down, had loads delivered.
Then got to school, where we were given a half-pint of milk or 2 half pints if we wanted, sucking the milk in a straw.
Then more milk at lunch-time, more in the afternoon. We'd see several empty milk outside the kitchens by the end of the day. Then.. that 'bitch' Maggie Thatcher.. took that all away! Kids were healthy & clever then, but with no fresh milk to drink.. just those soft brain-damaging (allegedly) soft drinks & processed food. We had free milk, free chocolate bars, free fruit & free school dinners back in the day.
Something is WRONG.. that decades later.. that ALL KIDS are entitled to free milk & healthy food as a 'right!' as part of having the 'right' to free decent education & medical help.

There's not enough milk, cos people keep eating all the cows for burgers & whatever else. Let the cows live to produce cheap/free milk.. much as possible!!!, don't eat the meat whle the cow can produce milk. Allow hens & chicks to roam free.. but fox hunting will have to be brought back to cull them.. cos they're 'everywhere!!!' around here, all around London. I nearly drove over 1 foxes recently.. tho' wouldn't bother me if I did .. I hate foxes, they kill egg laying hens. Bring back fox hunting, but with machine guns..!

Milk.. ! it's so.. important. Even cats like it..!

Who the fuck drinks 500 liters of milk in a month ? On the flip side who could afford to fill them up at around 500 dollars a pop. thats just estimating at the 4 dollar a gallon price round here.

Have you a fridge that can keep 500 litres at once, i'm quite sure OP has not nor anyone else I know. I'm guess they are refrigerated tanks, hence the expense.

I remember milk deliveries in NYC (Bronx) in the 1970's however, in Manhattan, they probably did stop delivering milk in the 1960s or before. In fact, my parents used to purchase fruit and vegetables in the late 1950s from horse drawn carts around the Bronx Zoo area in a now bygone era.

In the late 1950s I saw the last hurdy gurdy man working the Prospect Avenue area of the Bronx with a monkey that used to collect change from apartments with open windows whether actually given or not.

I received this letter from my milkman this morning. It makes for pretty scary reading....

Dear Customer,

As you are no doubt aware, we live in a world of escalating costs and living expenses and we in the Milk Provision Bureau (MPB) are no different. Running costs for our vans have now risen from £1.00 per mile (2008 figures) to £1.54 per mile (a rise of nearly 55%).

We regret that we therefore have to scale back our delivery service to a level more in keeping with today's social expectations.

As a result, milk will be delivered once a month. In oreder to facilitate the deliveries we intend to fit tasteful, double bunded tanks into your premises. These will come in a variety of sizes (although standard size will be 500 litres) and can be conveniently hidden behind bushes or even built into the load bearing walls of your abode. In addition, they will come in a variety of colours, blue (full fat), green (semi-skimmed) and red (skimmed). For those of you wishing to have a super cream milk we are also including a free 100 litre gold tank with every purchase of two or more standard tanks (500 litre minimum capacity).

As a further bonus, single cream, double cream and cottage cheese can all be dispensed into 50 litre "anniversary drums" for a nominal charge.

I'm sure the changes proposed will go largely un-noticed, although I would like to offer my apologies for any inconvenience in advance.
