My neighbour had the bloke come round on friday to measure up for the tanks. He reckons it's going to cost over a grand for the three tanks (he's going for a full fat, skimmed and is taking up a free cottage cheese tank option). Plus he's liable for maintainence AND making good after installation.

He muttered something about the first five hundred litres being half price when you take up the two (standard size) plus one (cottage cheese size) offer. My concern is firstly half price of what? And secondly once they've been fitted do they have me by the balls or can i shop around to get the best price? I mean, where is the competition in all this?

Now, if i could convert my mahussively massive gas guzzling, 25 year old land rover to run on milk?

Shouldn't be too difficult.

But then again, i bet them b'stards at the milk bureau will be forced to put something in the milk, you know, like red milk.

They've got you every way ain't they.

Yeh. Bollox. Ican forget that idea anyway. Besides, if i did convert my trust British work horse to run on milk, i'd probably get some Chinese man stealing it from me to reverse engineer it. The buggars.

Right, gotta go, that rocket in my garage ain't gonna build itself.

Why would you put milk in a tank ? Don't you put it in the fridge ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1466124

Have you a fridge that can keep 500 litres at once, i'm quite sure OP has not nor anyone else I know. I'm guess they are refrigerated tanks, hence the expense.
 Quoting: alexisj9

I have an extra frige in the basement but why would I fill it up with milk. It would be bad after a month even in the fridge. Buy powdered milk if you have to , condensed milk in cans or take a trip to the store. The milk delivered by the milk man is a dying proposition.

So, get a once a month delivery from several different companies on different dates. We haven't had milk deliveries here in at least 40 years.

I received this letter from my milkman this morning. It makes for pretty scary reading....

Dear Customer,

As you are no doubt aware, we live in a world of escalating costs and living expenses and we in the Milk Provision Bureau (MPB) are no different. Running costs for our vans have now risen from £1.00 per mile (2008 figures) to £1.54 per mile (a rise of nearly 55%).

We regret that we therefore have to scale back our delivery service to a level more in keeping with today's social expectations.

As a result, milk will be delivered once a month. In oreder to facilitate the deliveries we intend to fit tasteful, double bunded tanks into your premises. These will come in a variety of sizes (although standard size will be 500 litres) and can be conveniently hidden behind bushes or even built into the load bearing walls of your abode. In addition, they will come in a variety of colours, blue (full fat), green (semi-skimmed) and red (skimmed). For those of you wishing to have a super cream milk we are also including a free 100 litre gold tank with every purchase of two or more standard tanks (500 litre minimum capacity).

As a further bonus, single cream, double cream and cottage cheese can all be dispensed into 50 litre "anniversary drums" for a nominal charge.

I'm sure the changes proposed will go largely un-noticed, although I would like to offer my apologies for any inconvenience in advance.

How can you laugh at this situation? What precisely do you find so amusing that you can end your response with a "lol"? It's indicative of today's society that a situation which could potentially affect hundreds of people can be dismissed with what can only be described as contempt. Sad really.

Splendid idea!
I, for one, will be ordering every available tank in every available colour.

p.s I wish the spell check would stop telling me that "colour" is spelled "color" it is not and never will be.

Ahh the sound of the electric motor of the delivery van ... the click as it stops and then rusty gates squeeking open. The chink chink of glass bottles and the closing of gates.

Alas, our milkmen are going the same way the old phone boxes did ... England, our England... she is becoming Sinkgland.

This shit is getting real! My gran said she had some guy from the MPB round and was using very hard-sell tactics. He was very insistent she take two five hundred litre tanks (even though a couple of anniversary drums would suffice) and a cottage cheese drum. She hates cottage cheese.

Actually, we have at least one dairy in the area that offers milk delivery. Delicious milk, but too expensive to justify, IMO.

This is old news. Here in Austria we have had these milk tanks for years, it was an EU directive (KR657I899 I think). Last year we had a new tank installed for orange juice (100 litres) and a cranberry juice tank (150 litres because my mum suffers from urnary tract infections and cranberry juice is apparently helpful).

Indeed it does. I'm surprised the Brits haven't got these already. Although they are rather unsightly at first, I will say that the tanks can be helpful sometimes though. My gran has a two hundred litre yoghurt tank (it was a free gift with two five hundred litre tanks) which is marvellous because she suffers terribly with thrush. Now, not only does she have fresh natural yoghurt "on tap" to eat but she can also ease her discomfort by smearing yoghurt on her inflamed, itchy labia.

It depends on the geographic location. They were still delivering milk into the early '70's in my town. It's almost an unfair burden to have lived long enough to have known first hand what life USED to be like in America.

Kids used to be able to go to the store and buy a pack of cigarettes for their mom or dad.

Penny candy was actually a penny.

Candy bars 10 cents.

Used to make money just going door to door, looking for odd jobs.

Moms rarely worked and dad's were respected.

You actually KNEW each neighbor within a few blocks of you.

Two kids messed up and broke something? Got your ass whooped by the nearest dad available and the kids father thanked them for setting them straight.
