Re: I found an ancient sterling silver mason ring
If it is marked 'sterling', or '925', it is not ancient, since those are relatively recent demarkations for silver purity.

Before around 1900, and even for a while afterward, silver was only marked by the makers mark in the US.

In Europe, silver would be hallmarked, and you can look up "hallmarks" (English, French, etc) and find out what year it was made.

The ring may be old and interesting, but if it is "sterling", it is not 'ancient'.

I found one as well. It has ster. W.J. It also has a name, date, and City. What does the W.J. Mean?
