It tastes very very much like beef. If people dont' know it's horse, they will literally assume it's beef.

Very simple, not at all glamorous, but that's the truth.

Couldnt tell ya, and I have NO interest in finding out.

Really, that is interesting. The meat looks a lot like beef in the photos I have seen.

I have read about that. Pretty savage to take someones pet like that.

Hmmm, I've had it. Closest thing I could say would be a cross between ostrich and slightly gamey beef.

and just a few weeks ago up in palm bch county peoples pet cows have been stolen right from their pastutres and you know they are doing it for the meat.

more of this will happen as times get harder and harder for people.

As a strict herbivore horse should be a very clean meat, like rabbit or deer.

I like horse meat, but no longer buy it because my kids have a precious attitude to horses. In the Netherlands we called it Paardvlees and it was a regular staple in sandwiches for lunch. It is very lean and not a bit like beef. The closest I have come across is moose. It is best eaten very thinly sliced.

So it may be best in stews, braised, or crock pot (slow cooker) type recipes?

What about ground, like hamburger meat?

I do not see why not, though I know of no recipes.

Probably recipes like Beef Stew, Beef Manhattan, Cottage Pie, Goulash, Crock Pot Roast, and Currie would be some good recipes to start with.

Just curious, did you buy horse meat in Canada? What was the price relative to beef or pork?

IT probably tastes better than monkey meat. I'd think it would be good to barbeque (smoke).

Good smoked meat of any kind is hard to beat.

Our relatives knew what it tasted like. Back in the 50's was when mechanized farm equipment started taking over what had been the job of horse teams on most farms. This meant there was a huge overpopulation of horses, as there is today.
And it was not uncommon for horses to be slaughtered and eaten, though it wasn't really talked about. Everyone knew it and some did it.

I have horses, and let me tell you, it is hard to bury 1200 lbs. of well fed meat. But there has been nothing other to do with it since the ban on slaughter several years ago which ruined the horse industry.

I am a horse lover. But I challenge anyone to go into the back lot of a horse auction and meet up with some of the unhandled, rank and sour horses penned there and tell me that horses are pets. There are very many dangerous horses.

Today, it costs over $400.00 to have a horse euthanized and his carcass hauled off. Very few of the rural horse owners can afford that.

I actually know quite a bit about the subject, and I am grateful that horse processing is on its way back. There were a lot of problems due to transportation, and managing of the horses once on the facilities, but there is no reason those should not be humanely addressed.

Another thing; horse meat is much healthier than beef for people. It has higher protein and lower fat, and is much like emu in that regard. It is a far superior meat.

Also, the reason there are still WW1 & II bomber jackets around is that they were made by our government out of horse hide, not cowhide. Horse hide is also a very superior leather.

And as much as I hate to say it, I am of the belief that our govt has a plan for the over 30,000 BLM horses it has in pens which cost millions to maintain. Hate to say it, but I think our govt will someday be feeding those horses to people in fema camps.
