IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
I'd really like to hear about your experience with getting family onboard and cooperative about prepping and stocking up for ANY disaster.

So many people choose to jam their heads tightly in the sand and believe that everything is just fine and TPTB will handle any emergency.
Evidently, what's going on in the Middle East AND the increase in natural disasters has escaped their grasp.

So,....how do YOU cope with being surrounded by nay-sayers who think you've got several screws loose for preparing for what looks to be a very uncertain future?

Anyone?

All it took for my family to get on board was a massive snowstorm we had which resulted in 4 days without power and freezing our asses off!

I've told family about this enough times. All I get are snide remarks. We cannot change anyone into 'believing' this. I gave up mentioning prepping. Even when the Govt. mentions it on tv they still don't believe it.

Do it quietly so as to not disrupt the unaware family members.

A few months worth is all you realistically need.

Even the Red Cross advises that each family have 72 hours worth of emergency supplies, but a lot of people think it's just so the Red Cross can sell their own Emergency Kits online.
Personally, I think my family has Krazy-Glued their heads in the sand!

Well, don't make it a personal thing where it's more an issue of you being right. Do what you need to do. Each individual will become more aware when they are ready and only then.

Re: IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
Rather than call it prepping, talk about it in terms of being ready to go without electric in case of a storm or long winter event like being iced down.

In 2009 we were 17 days without electric, and many in this state were without power even longer due to a massive icestorm that almost brought down the entire grid. If you wanted heat and eats, you figured out real quick what kind of trouble you were in if you didn't have some supplies stocked.

So, maybe experience is the best teacher, but you don't have to wait for the grid to drop to find out. Simply cut off the power to your house for a few days and allow everyone to experience it first. They'll either learn from that or they won't.

Re: IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
At first I tried to get those closest to me on board, and into prepping...but unless the person sees what you are talking about right away, they are more then likely to just think you are a bit paranoid or off your rocker. And then it just becomes irritating for both of you, they don't want to hear about it, and you don't want to let the issue go, especially if you feel you are also prepping for them.

There really is no way to convice someone of something...they have to reach this conclusion themselves. Having gone through this first stage, and everyone pretty much thinks I am a chicken little, I have now changed tactics, and am pretty low-key about things, yet am still prepping as much as possible. This is what I recommend you do. I think it actually also helps people to "come around" to your viewpoint as well, as you are not beating them over the head about it all the time.

Keep in mind that many relationships have been broken completely or strained because of this issue...and that kind of defeats the point of prepping for them, doesn't it? So let it go, fight the battle on another front...

So I pretty much don't talk about the economy, the war situation etc., to anyone these days. If someone seems interested in the topic in their own right, I say things like "well, what do you think that would mean for your life, your personal situation?". And then, "well, rather then sitting in fear, what do you think you could do about it/do to prepare for it?" . I think many people, when hearing about the problems in the world, just sort of shrug their shoulders and think "well, I guess we are all going die like that, huh?". It's a strange detachment from what this reality means, I think this is due to how we live pretty detached in general from the world in this modern life.

So keep your head down, keep prepping, avoid the poltical/economic talk completely, and try this out for a few months...they might listen to you more if you don't seem so crazy to them.

Re: IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
It takes time, which may/may not be in short supply.

You plant the seed, you water it until they're tired of hearing about it, then you sit back.

What I've seen is that usually in a year and a half, something "clicks", they've added two plus two themselves, and then they come to you, full of zeal, propounding exactly what you'd previously told them as if they'd never heard of it from you and as if you'd never heard it before yourself.

Which is annoying as hell after one's previous efforts, but the moment to get things moving as they're now "on-board", thinking it their own idea.

Re: IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
It's a popular question. However, Some people will never get their family on board. It's going to be stressful and they will have to validate how much they believe in their own world view.

It's a little harder sell when things are going well in rough times to make a case for being prepped. It's also not exactly something we were experienced with in being able to do things ourselves.

For me, I see things are not getting better. I am generally pretty aware of how things are going in the world news. I don't really watch mainstream news, I get news from all kinds of places, as obviously I am on here :)

The turn around for my family was basically telling my wife that it's not about us, it's about our children's future.

After she got over being self centered and thinking only of how she would react to a world crisis, she was on board. My wife generally used to think she can't do much about the world, she felt if the world goes to hell, why live in it. After I brought our kids into it, and explained they don't really get a choice without some preparation to have another option, she was on board.

Since then, we have really prepared for several years. We are very prepared. It's basically a lifestyle for us now to not necessarily prep, but to be self sufficient.

We have canned and dried foods, water storage & purification, Bug out bags & trailer, Medical & Dental, Weapons & Ammo, Livestock, Gardens, Canning/Drying/Smoked/Food Prep, Stoves, Hundreds of gallons in Gas/Kerosene/Propane, Steel/Sheet metal/Wood/Nuts/Bolts/Nails, Workshop/Tools/Torches/Welders/Grinders, Generators/Solar/Wind, Home defense, Perimeter defense, etc...

We are very prepared. My kids know where their food comes from, and we do lots of things together.

If you would have asked me 5 years ago would I own a gun, I would have said never. I now own many all shapes and sizes, including many assault weapons and bigger stuff. My whole family regularly shoots including my 9 year old. My kids know gun safety, how to load magazines, how to clean guns, and how to shoot. Me and my wife carry our handguns and have concealed carry permits. I regularly carry my .40 S&W Glock 24x7 now days. I figure why have the permit if you are not going to carry it. Have smaller 9mm, .380 and .22 handguns for other occasions like church, where I don't exactly want people to know I have a gun on me.

Most people realize that things are not getting better, but they don't know what to do about it, so they choose to deny it, or say they can't do anything.

I personally think the 7 stages of grief apply pretty well to people who don't prep. I think they are in Shock and Denial.

1. SHOCK & DENIAL
2. PAIN & GUILT
3. ANGER & BARGAINING
4. "DEPRESSION", REFLECTION, LONELINESS
5. THE UPWARD TURN
6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH
7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE

First thing.People will avoid what they fear. They fear what they can not control. You need to get them out of the fear mindset.

Give them information.Let them know they can decide there own future.Help explain how prepping actually saves money(buying in bulk,on sale instead of when needed). If nothing else right now prepping is an inflation hedge, and with inflation running "officially" at 3.6% why would you not stock up on things you use every day?

Re: IMPORTANT! How Do You Get Family Onboard About Prepping?
I really appreciate all the good tips.

I used to try and get family into it but now, with some of them, I don't even mention it. "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink" kind of philosophy.
I've continued to stock up slowly but surely.

Oddly enough, my 89 year old dad called me long distance and advised me to stock up because things weren't looking good. My jaw must have hit the ground right then.
This is a guy who always ONLY looks at the positive in life...the least alarmist person I've ever known and he's telling me to be prepared? WOW!
At least I've got his support. Smart fellow!!

my advise is, dont tell them. Hide your food, cause if you show them your food stash and they don't believe, they will just eat it up.

Sometimes they will eat the stash first even.

I try talking to my family about it but they just think im a fear mongering doomsayer. How is the population supposed to give a damn when people's own families wont even listen to them and what am I supposed to do now, only worry about myself ? It's a pain in the arse because they wont lift a finger until the last minute when supermarket shelves will be empty. Sigh, oh well.

I have preps, but I look at it in a whole new perspective. I can't change anyone but myself. I have to put all my trust in God that He will supply my needs. Example..what if we get hit with a nuclear warhead..that means I've wasted time and money prepping. None of us know what will happen or when, we very well could be forced out of our homes ( God forbid). I'm done prepping, have a ton of canned foods etc..enough is enough.

It is a major task to try to understand where we are in History. The collapse of empire is usually only recognized by those who are aware of how we got to this place, it has taken a century. Without a grasp of history it is hopeless. I have spent ten years studying to really peel back the layers of bullshit, most people do not have that kind of time, and most would rather not know. Do not lose heart. Soon it will be undeniable, then youll be explaining how you knew what was coming! GOOD LUCKhf

I have remained pretty silent on the subject because my in-laws always know more than me (everyone) on everything \"cough\" and the few times I have even broached the subject I get nothing but mocking laughter. I just sent out this email (see below) to just about everyone on my email list the other day because I want those who have mocked to know, I am NOT preparing for you especially when you were so arrogant and that if/when things get bad I may tell you to get bent ..of course nothing but crickets from the ones I was really trying to reach.

My email.....

I don\'t know how bad things are going to get, humans have never been in this position nationally or globally, but when we have seen similar times, things have not gone well. The Governments, money handlers, and power brokers around the world are quietly preparing, but they aren\'t telling you on your nightly news.

Here is just one article outlining this premise

[link to www.shtfplan.com]

I am sending this email out to my family and friends in a final plea to get those not heeding the warning signs all around you to do so. Some of you know whats happening and for you this is just an offer of help to get you prepared. The few who know the score and are doing something to prepare, maybe this will encourage you to try one more time to warn your family and friends.

I am doing this for both altruistic and selfish reasons. I do not want loved ones to suffer and I don\'t want to be put in the position to refuse you help that may jeopardize my children from going without. I know , I have been warning of impending financial \"doom\" for a number of years now and you may think I am crazy because we have not had a quick, massive wound causing death. What we have been experiencing is a small nick in an organ causing barely noticeable internal bleeding which is about to cause us to run out of blood.

I am not going to send out a bunch of links backing my claims, I have been sent enough the past couple years I would hope I have gained enough respect through the years to at least be taken for my word but if you just google any doomy financial keywords you will get all the info you need. If you really want me to send more of the stuff I read on a daily basis just ask, but I am not getting this info from some secret vault of hidden information.

I am not an expert on many things, but I am good at gathering and digesting information and I understand history, and there is really no other conclusion I can come to other than we are in for some VERY hard times, and they are no more than a couple years off at best, most likely much much sooner.

I am just making one last attempt to get you to, at the very least, stock up on some food. I am not proselytizing the end of the world, just possibly the end of the way we have been living for at least a short while. (Many of you remember the dud that was Y2K and may not be worried now thinking \"Meh, just more overeacting\" Well, I didn\'t think anything was gonna happen because of Y2K.... whats happening now IS real) .

I hope and pray I am wrong, I don\'t care if I end up being the crazy tinfoil hat wearing pariah. If I am wrong then we will all be ok and that\'s all that matters and at the worst you have extra food and maybe a gun in your house. If I am right and just one of you gets prepared because of my prompting then I will have made a difference. If I am right and you don\'t do the minimum to protect yourself from the inconceivable, well you need to use your imagination, which is my point .

My BARE MINIMUM suggestions are:
Have at least 2 months of food for you and your family.
Have some alternative sources of light and heat (candles, propane heater. everyone should have this even in good times in the event of power failures)
Keep at least 1 five gallon can of whatever fuel your vehicle uses
Keep a good amount of Cash on hand
Have a plan to get out of town as the Detroit Metro area is not going to be Disney land if things get ugly.
Have some kind of personal protection

I know, no one wants to think of these things, but we are living in Historical times that will try mens hearts and souls, PLEASE at least consider some worst case scenarios based on current events and if nothing else, get your mind set to the POSSIBILITY of things getting bad for at least awhile.

If you want more help and more details of what I think you should get and be doing let me know.

In the end I think everything will be ok, its the short term that worries me. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst...but we all know how the last round of \"hope\" worked out...
