| Anonymous Coward User ID: 4472362 12/02/2011 05:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why is it news that other stars have orbiting planets? And the search for a planet that could hold life, why? So we can screw it up there too, and start wars, pollution and over consumption? We were given planet Earth and there's a reason why the other planets are too far away; it's THEIR (other life forms) planet, not OURS for the taking. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 4472362 12/02/2011 05:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The more I think about it, the more I can see that the human race is like a malignant tumor, looking for an access to infect other organs in the body. So are we on planet earth, looking to infect other planets in our vast galaxy. |

So, a private group of Astronomers using the Earthbound Keck Observatory are going to release a statement on the 18 New Planets they have found... NASA finds out about it and releases a statement an hour earlier, that they are going to release the findings of their Earth-Orbiting Planet Finder in a few days... Thunder...Steal... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6410466 They'll be no fucking use to humans, and we probably won't want to meet any intelligent life that's developed on them! That's ridiculous. Our ingenuity will compensate the so-called gravity that you think would stop us. |

If normality is the measure of how well adjusted one is to a profoundly sick society, then i dont ever want to be normal. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 6419911 12/02/2011 07:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not as much as you may think. Remember that gravity decreases with the square of the distance. Double the distance it is only a quarter. 4 times the distance it is only 1/16th. Planets with greater masses tend to be much larger. For instance Jupiter (although a gas planet) has the mass of over 300 earths but the gravity on the surface (if it had one) is only 2.5 times that of earth as the planet is so much wider. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 6419911 12/02/2011 07:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Stars with big planets are likely to have little planets as well. If aliens looked at our solar system, the first planet they'd detect is Jupiter. Quoting: ToSeek not necessarily. it depends on what they were looking for. If they had a telescope like Kepler , but just a bit more powerful then the first think they would detect is Mercury. Kepler works as planets block sunlight from the star as they orbit. The quicker a planet orbits the quicker it can be detected. Thus Mercury would be seen first. They typically need about 3 orbits to confirm a planets existence. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 6423188 12/02/2011 07:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Two articles, probably related; Quoting: TBar1984 Astronomers Discover 18 Huge New Alien Planets Date: 02 December 2011 Time: 03:52 PM ET [link to www.space.com] "The discoveries increase the number of known planets orbiting massive stars by 50 percent. The exoplanet bounty should also help astronomers better understand how giant planets form and grow in nascent alien solar systems, researchers said. The haul comes just a few months after a different team of researchers announced the discovery of 50 newfound alien worlds, including one rocky planet that could be a good candidate for life. The list of known alien planets is now well over 700 and climbing fast. The researchers surveyed about 300 stars using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and instruments in Texas and Arizona. They focused on so-called "retired" type A stars that are at least 1.5 times more massive than our own sun...." NASA to Announce New Alien Planet Findings Monday Date: 02 December 2011 Time: 02:59 PM ET [link to www.space.com] "NASA will reveal new discoveries made by its planet-hunting Kepler space telescope on Monday (Dec. 5), according to a recent agency announcement. NASA will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT) Monday at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. Researchers will discuss new developments since Kepler's last major announcement, which occurred nearly a year ago and included a treasure trove of 1,235 newfound alien planet candidates...." I'm sure they've known this for a while. It's just time for them to implant the "mind-seed" that there's the possibility of other life in the universe to prepare us for the overt invasion. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 6419911 12/02/2011 08:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Um.. They have had movies of alien and invasion since the 40's at least. Novels such as HG Wells War of the worlds long before that. Even in the 50's scientists thought and publicly claimed there were likely aliens living on Mars. They were wrong , but the public is well aware of the possibilities of aliens. You point of view is poorly thought out and frankly stupid. You must be very popular here! |

NASA already knows of 165 alien civilizations that have contacted the earth, and indeed the US government has signed treaties with many. This isn't news.. yawn.. please wake us up when real news arrives. Thank you! |
