New death as EU meets on bird flu
New wave of possible bird flu cases reported across Europe, Asia

(CNN) -- Europe´s top health officials are discussing how to thwart the spread of bird flu as the deadly H5N1 virus that has now hit the continent reared its head again in east and Southeast Asia.

Thailand on Thursday reported that a farmer had died from bird flu, the first victim to die in the country in more than a year.

The 48-year-old farmer, in Kanchanaburi province, west of the capital Bangkok, was the 13th person to die in Thailand, and takes the death toll in Asia since 2003 to more than 60. The man died after contracted the virus after slaughtering and eating an infected chicken.

Also in Asia, Taiwan´s Council of Agriculture said Thursday it had found birds infected with the lethal H5N1 flu in a container smuggled from China, the first case on the island since late 2003.

Taiwan coastguards seized the Panama-registered cargo on October 14, and tests confirmed about 1,000 birds were infected with the H5N1 virus, Reuters quoted an official as saying.

On Wednesday, China´s official Xinhua news agency reported 2,600 birds had been found dead of the H5N1 strain in the country´s northern grasslands, according to The Associated Press.

The H5N1 strain, which first surfaced in Hong Kong in 1997, re-emerged in 2003 in South Korea, and has spread to Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Russia and Europe.

Most of the human deaths have been linked to contact with sick birds. But experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that can be transmitted between humans, triggering a global pandemic.

With the bird flu virus encroaching on Europe, health ministers from 25 European Union nations were meeting near London on Thursday to talk about how to keep the virus from jumping to humans, and how to respond if it does.

Several EU countries are already slaughtering suspect birds and Britain´s chief medical officer Liam Donaldson described the possibility of a human flu pandemic "public health enemy No. 1 and we are on the march against it."

Re: COOKED chicken blamed for H5N1 bird flu death!!!
Has anyone else seen deep cuts or specials on chicken at the grocerīs?

Normally, at my favorite store, boneless chicken breasts are a really good buy at $1.99 per pound.

Several days ago, a local chain market had them for a one day "special" at $.99 per pound! Needless to say, I stocked up.

The price got me thinking that farmers may be dumping chicken on the market in order to reap SOME profits before this bird flu scare reaches an even wider audience.

At least, thatīs what Iīm hoping, ha, that chicken better not be out dated!

The article says "slaughtered" and eaten. It does NOT say teh flu was contracted from eating cooked chix.

A little common sense here. Cooking kills viruses. Basic stuff.

Donīt panic. All may not be well, but all is not lost. And chicken is good for you.

I guess I should have added that I first saw the report on MSNBC, which, of course, had added verbal commentary.

They stated the chicken was COOKED and then eaten. The man who died from the H5N1 was the first victim who had died after eating cooked chicken and this was the first time the scientists learned that the virus was NOT killed by cooking.

Wonder if there is any link they havenīt yet discovered in H5N1 like the prions in Mad Cow Disease that canīt be erradicated by coooking, etc.

Thank you for confirming the SHODDY journalism of MSNBC.

The man SLAUGHTERED the chicken HIMSELF.

He didnīt pick up a box of nuggets from KFC.

A.C. 3215, they tested the cooked remmanants of the bird and it STILL had live H5N1.

I hope Iīve made that clear.

A.C. 3215, do a search on this subject.

France, Indonesia, and other countries are stating that "there is NO EVIDENCE" that cooked chicken is unsafe.

Many articles are stating the fear of the H5N1 bird flu is creating a panic in the chicken market and you and I both know that when $$$$ is involved, the spin gets worse.

Catching that one phrase on MSNBC may have been a stroke of luck, or a mis-speak, but deserves more investigation.

Sorry I canīt help more now, Iīm leaving my home shortly.

Donīt sweat it Polly, we know that the news agencies have no sense of responsibility for delivering the truth. They just want to shock everyone to keep the ratings up. "cooked" is a relevant term, as far as we know he tried to roast it with a bic lighter.
What everyone is really missing is that doesnīt the flu usually have a three to seven day incubation period? They make it sound like he ate the chicken and dropped dead. That doesnīt make sense. If not, what did he do, leave the dead chicken laying around for them to test days later? I think not. How could they determine that he hadnīt contracted it from regular daily exposure on the farm. Thatīs the U.S. news for ya.

more fear mongering

slaughtered and cooked, the guy had direct LIVE contact with said bird

weīve known about this virus for like two years or so now

so why is everyone all freaked out when the WORLDWIDE death toll is now at 60

makes you wonder what we ought to be paying attention to

I think the argument goes that the virus is becoming more widespread and has a greater chance of mutating into a form that will transfer human-human, and not bird-human.

If and when that happens, those 60 cases will explode geometrically.

------------------------------------------

And it wonīt matter much at all since there will be no chickens left to eat and as we know there arenīt many fish left. Which leaves beef (or madcow burgers) so wcha gonna eat?

Everyone I talk to these days seems to buy what the MSM is saying and they are scared like chickens. You tell them only 60 doa in 3 years and NOT ONE CASE of proven man2man xfer and they calm down a bit. Then they ask why? Why would the MSM want to scare us.

I then ask them how their fear index is :)
War - Fear
Economy - Fear
Flu - Fear
Disaster - Fear

Then I remind them that you give power to the Fear by harboring so much of it. Let it all go and just live like you were a mouse and do not know or care what goes on in the Human world.
Think like a mouse, eat sleep and be marry then smoke one with a cat and hope he doesn;t get the unchies.

Polly....Are they sure it was cooked chicken? He slaughtered the bird himself so odds are he contracted it during that process.
The one thing the U.S. and Canada has to help protect it from the bird flu right now is it imports very little poultry if any.
The best thing they could do now is to act in unison with Canada and Mexico and ban the importation of any kind of birds into North America.

Cooking beef does not kill Mad Cow - it takes 600 degrees to do that. What makes anyone think that heat will īcook outī the virus?

No beef, no chicken, no fish - is pork next?
