Iran seriously shot down one of the US's best spy planes?
This just sounds to fishy.
Irans military technology has to be way behind the U S's. They're still trying to harness nuclear power for crying out loud. The U S has had that power for over half a century.

Who really believes that Iran had the tech to shoot down a top US spy plane?

Im not trying to prop the U S up on a untouchable pedestal. It just seems so improbable. I guess if china or russia gave them some new toys then that would make sense.

Nuclear power is not really related to anti-aircraft weaponry.

Hell, you could probably shoot down some of the most advanced planes in the world with WWII era AA-guns.

You just need to hit it.

"The semi-official Fars news agency quoted a military source saying Iran's electronic-cyber warfare unit had taken control of the aircraft and brought it ''under their possession''."

The Iranians are smart people and with the sanctions, they have developed quite a capability to produce home made versions of Russian missiles and anti-aircraft systems.

But apparently they hacked this one down. Cheap technology. Even the Somali pirates were capabable of hijacking a Russian spy satellite to track shipping. That was probably just old fashioned spying and compromising someone on the inside of the Russian team, but it goes to show. There are many ways to fight.

Re: Iran seriously shot down one of the US's best spy planes?
Believe it or not, but the Iranians have the most formidable military in the entire Middle East/Southwest Asia region. They got most of their equipment from us prior to 1979 (chemical weapons, f-14 Tomcats, P-3 Orions) and from Russia after 1979 (Kilo submarines, S-300 antiaircraft missiles and uranium.

Attacking Iran would not be like picking a fight with the other dozen or so defenseless countries that America has declared "victory" over in the last 20 years.

Funny how Americans think that they are the brightest in the world and nobody has the ability to stand up. Look at ourselves...for the most part this country is filled with floride doped drooling zombies shuffling around walmart in their housecoats producing nothing but a welfare check. If we keep pushing people around like we do while being so arrogant as to underestimate adversaries then we are in for a rude awakening. And we deserve every inch of that black eye that we're about to get when Russia and China finally have enough of our preemptive strike first policy and romps all over the globe.

The F14s were disabled by Grumman and Hughes Aerospace Technicians just before they bugged out in 1979. This has been well documented. (see links) The techs took key avionics parts that made the Hughes Phoenix air-to-air missle system virtually useless except for being "targets". Iran was the only nation to receive F14s. The Iranians would certainly have more aggressive in the use of these aircraft against the inferior French and Soviet aircraft in the Iraqi airforce had the F14's been operational. They did manage to get a few of the fleet of 77 F14's airborne and made limited attacks on the Iraqi forces. There is quite a bit of debate over the effectness of the Iranian F14's in battle.

The Iranians have been trying to get the parts required to make the F14's operational since the 1980s. There were many operations that they tried both in the US and abroad to obtain the parts both through covert means from US Navy and Grumman personel and foreign countries that had access to Phoenix fire control systems. The Iran Contra affair was part of this effort.

Re: Iran seriously shot down one of the US's best spy planes?
Kudos for the research...and you're right the F-14s are not much of a threat but they have some much nicer Russian aircraft that they have acquired since.

I don't think their pilots are very good but they do have a quite impressive air defense capability as far as missiles go.

Point is, Iran and Syria are the big boys on the block in the Middle East and they happen to be BFFs...Iran would make Iraq look like a cakewalk.

And before anyone starts chuckling at 1970s military equipment...you'd be surprised how much of the American military is still running on stuff from the same era...i.e. almost all submarines, all patrol and cargo planes, all our GPS satellites, and about half of the fighters.

Jeeez you yanks can be so stupid!

Let me break it down into simple language for you.

1. The US has Trillions of dollars worth of debt.
Iran does not.

2. The US public only gets to hear what your propaganda machine wants you to hear.
This is far from the truth about Iran.

3. What makes you thinks Irans military tech is miles behind the USA.
Let me guess... because your MSM tells you! Dooooohhhh!

Lets face facts, the USA is hanging on by its finger tips, pretty soon it will not be able to fed its own citizens let alone wage multiple wars all over the world.
The other "emerging" powers that are not bankrupt will take over and the USA's time as the big boy will be finished.

The news here said the operators lost the control link, thus the craft went down. It may be that there is technology out there now to block of jam the control signal. In any case we lost one of our most sophisticated spy devices to Iran, and you know that China and Russia are having a field day. I am surprised that there is not a self destruct device on board that if the signal is lost for a certain time, it blows up.

maybe it does not have a self-destruct device because US did not think this type of drones would be detectable and can be captured by its enemy?
