Firefighters watch as couple's home burns to the ground (because they hadn't paid $75 subscription fee)
[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

A couple stood helplessly by and watched their home and valuables go up in flames because a team of firefighters refused to help - as they had not paid their 'subscription fees'.

Vicky Bell and her boyfriend managed to escape from their trailer home but did not have time to grab many personal belongings.

Miss Bell, from Tennessee, said the blaze was terrifying - but almost as shocking was seeing fire trucks sitting in the distance and doing nothing to help.

Bunch of heartless wankers. I would have broke ranks and helped. If more people helped each other for helps sake, the bankers money would be worthless, and we as people, with any skill whatsoever would become priceless.

What say you all???

The firefighers aren't lawyers, so it makes no sense for them to act like they had the law in their hands.

Well if common sense had reared its head here, the firefighters would have requested the $75 on the spot and then could have proceeded to put the fire out. But that takes some out of the box thinking which many neanderthals are not capable of.

I wonder if Good Samaritan laws come into play in this instance.

Didn't the FD endanger other people/property in a neglectful manner? They are to help in an emergency situation, right?

Hate to say it, but that would have made the situation worse in the future.

Would you ever pay for fire insurance, if you knew that you could pay after your house caught on fire?

They should have offered them a $5,000 fee for fighting the fire. To be paid back over a year or two.

No, they don't do it that way because if they did, only people who had fires would ever pay the $75. It costs far more than $75 to put out a fire anyway. Why should the people in the county get free services that they aren't paying for through city property tax? That's what it boils down to. Want the service, then subscribe to it.

That's why they actually go on-site - to keep it from spreading to other houses.

So the city looses it's 1,000pounds a year that the couple paid in Council Tax, also know as property tax. Looks like everyone lost with this debacle. The city lost, the couple lost and even the fire fighters lost because they will never collect that 75pounds now or ever again from the couple.

Why not have a fine of at least four times the annual 75pound fee if they have to go to a house on a call that didn’t pay?

Cut your nose off to spite your face type of situation.

Seriously, the only thing the FD could do is watch, and keep it from spreading. its a TRAILER PARK, once on fire they go up so quick if you blink its done. They dont burn for long.

everything burns, there arent any fire retardant materials used in the construction of older models.

The real question is what caused the fire. Is it possible an associate-agent of the fire department contribute to this blaze?

Certainly an investigation will be launched to determine any arson or evidence of foul-play.

A media stunt to ensure the citizens of rural TN pay their subscription fees?

No matter either-way, Justice prevails.

Sure it costs more than $75 to put out a single fire. Now imagine that 1,000 residents that pay their fee and never have a fire. Not to mention, a fire-department is not a private-sector funded service, it's county/city/state/government financed.

In word, this case is: Extortion.

Paying for the fire department to do their job is akin to paying for a cop to pull you over and write you a ticket.

I voted to pin this ~ not to hate on the fire department, rather to enforce the axiom "Trust no one but yourself."

Guys, guys,

THis story was already covered in September of THIS year,
In October/November of LAST year (2010)

Just do a google on the title.

You'll find for example this :
[link to www.wpsdlocal6.com]

or this :
[link to www.msnbc.msn.com]
(YES : MSNBC, and look very careful at the date in the beginning of the article...)

This is a story which is brought everyonce and a while. In most cases it is launched on one or another obscure blog, internet news papers start bringing it and MSM picks it up to fill up the gaps in their newspapers...

THIS IS FREAKING GLP. WHY DOES NOONE HERE REMEMBER THAT THIS STORY WAS BROUGHT LAST YEAR TOO... WHat a bunch of people here... And you guys claim being into conspiracy theories??? Theories with roots sometimes DECADES ago... You don't even notice a hoax article which was published one year ago...

Man...... If I wouldn'n know better, I would say 99% of the residents here are sheeple... Or do I?

This was a city fire department funded by the city. People who live in the county have the option to pay $75/year to have fire service. Those that don't pay, don't have service. Pretty simple. Why should people who live in the county and don't pay city taxes get the same benefits as those who live in the city and pay the taxes to fund those extra services? That's the reason for having city and county taxes - those in the city get more for the taxes they pay and those in the county don't receive the same benefits.

It's happened again - same fire department - different fire. And the people that it happened to this time admitted that they knew the policy and didn't pay the fee because they didn't think it would ever happen to then.
